Bullets and Moulds for the 25 Hornet

Print Post
Hello All,

After deciding on the 25 Hornet, I am starting to select the specific gear to get started.

I have read a lot in the archives, but the shifting availability of good moulds means that past threads are only so useful.

Jerry Hartwig uses a Mos-moulded 120 grain semi-spitzer in his 25-20 WCF.  Something close to this seems like a decent starting point, though the smaller capacity of the 25 Hornet might suggest a lighter bullet.

I would like to breech seat.  The 25 Hornet is not on CPA's list of cartridges for which they offer a tapered throat, if that makes a difference.

So, what say you, with regard to the best bullet/mould for a 25 Hornet shooting at 200 yards?

Thanks so much,

John

The 120 Grain Mos in a 10 Twist would be an excellent choice. One of the folks and a friend in our group has a couple of rifles chambered in the 25Hornet both having 10 twist Douglas barrels and the same 120 grain bullet hopefully he will chime in.

Do you know of a source for this mould (or excellent substitute)?

There is a copy of a Mos 25 cal mold available, although not a exact copy of Jerry's but very close. It's a 117 gr NOE mold. Several people do well with it.

Jerry's success isn't a result of the bullet that he uses, it his attention to detail and his wind doping ability.

Many have had custom mold made to copy Jerry's bullet but, none have had his success.

I would add a link to the NOE mold but. I'm on my phone in AZ as my daughter jest had a baby.

Others should be able to give the link to you, Jack maybe?

Attached is a print out from my ballistic system for the 25 hornet along with a test target comparing using a single Remington case with preloaded Privi ppu brass.

I don't see a 117 grain .257 bullet on the NOE website - secret stash?

To be clear - I'm not looking for the silver (magic?) bullet - just a good starting point Wink

Thanks, Barry - pretty amazing how well the PRVI brass does, in comparison.

Brooks makes a MOS look alike. I have the 25 hornet and the 120 mos original and Brooks as close a copy as I have seen. that said I must say all 120 mos do not appear to be exactly alike. Mine has a very small flat tip, bit seen others more pointed.

The NOE is cataloged as 260 118 rf Mos.
It is out of stock but for 4 and 5 cavity.

Ahh...

Here is a link to the two-cavity brass option.

Barry has also shot a 200yd. 250 at our range with the 25 Hornet in not so favorable conditions on an ASRA target if memory serves me right. He typically shot his 22 Hornet in all our matches and very seldom shot the 25 Hornet and this could have been during the time he was his checking his Mos copy per-say against Jerry H's Mos Bullet. It's been so long now I can no  remember all of the details but it was pretty much if not right out of the gate taking it to 200yds.
