Floral Foam Wad Seating

Well, folks, it has  been a long journey, but my rifle in .32 RKS with bullet mold is about to arrive in my hands.

One question:  My case length is 1.420.  Breech seating.

How deep should a floral foam wad be seated?  Is there a consensus and is it important?

If you have a case that will allow it you can seat down to .100" of the powder.  If not juct in the case mouth.

Thanks for the replies.

OK, given the internal taper of the case, if you place the wad in the case mouth or anywhere above the powder, won't the wad work its way down to the powder column?

That's assuming precharged cases transported to the range.  I suppose it wouldn't likely be a problem if you charged cases at the bench and handled them gently.

Advice is much appreciated.

I'd load the cases at home (I really do this), and plug 'em with upholstery foam as 'corks'. You could use old earplugs or similar if you want- just so it stays in securely.  I just unplug 'em and load, but if you want to use the foam, just do it at the range, and there will be no chance of it getting bounced down into the case.
Never used a wad myself, have you tried it that way first?

Thanks.  There's been no "first" yet.  Like I said, I'm new to this game and waiting for delivery of my rifle.

I'm anxious to get started, and welcome suggestions.  I'd like to keep the learning curve as short as possible.

I'm an old man and not getting any younger!

One other thing the sponge in the case does is retain the buggers in the cartridge box while driving to the range. If you try it with loaded cases and nothing to keep 'em in the bottom of the box (foam sticking out to the top of the box, mind you), when you get to the range all those carefully loaded cases will be either empty, mixed up or the few will be full of powder. Ask me how I know this, and how the foam came to be my 'secret'.
My foam is about 3/8 to half-inch square, and about two inches long. Save 'em in a baggie for reuse.

Oh man, can I relate to that.  I can be Mr. Fumblefingers.  If there's a way to spill something, I'll find it.

Fedex just brought my new/old toy!  Very timely.

32 Miller short in my high wall was the only ctg I used floral foam with since I kept spilling the powder into the action.  Loaded powder at the bench and pressed a 1/16” thick sheet of foam onto the case mouth.  The foam is kind of messy though.  A Miller action might be ok to skip the wad

I take pre-loaded cases to the range for some matches using flora foam I turn the case mouth down no chance of the foam slipping down the case. This is in a 32 Miller Short and after several trips to the range and back I kept several aside  to check the powder charge after a number of trips the charge weighed exactly the same. It's about 50 miles round trip for me to the range so I feel OK with that and I do put some thin packing foam in the top of the box that I carry the loaded shells in to help keep them from rattling around. Works for me your mileage may vary.

Last year I drove from northern Virginia to Kansas City with 200 loaded shells with floral foam in the case mouths. When I got to the range all 200 still had the foam intact.

Case mouth only.

Your cases are a bit short but will work.

.32 RKS cases are supposed to be trimmed to 1.470" in length.

Interesting.

Mr. Smith himself in a personal communication suggested using .360 Dan Wesson brass to form to .32 RKS.  That brass (Starline) starts at about 1.415", when sized in a .223 die lengthens to about 1.430, then trimmed to 1.420 to fit my chamber.  Mr. Smith also reviewed my chamber dimensions and gave his approval.

A related newbie question: What advantage is there to using the longer .357 brass to form to .32, when there seems to be more than enough case capacity with even the shorter common brass like .357 Magnum?

Thanks.  Those little details are good to know.

With that in mind, I wonder what kind of pressures these Schuetzen rounds generate?  The common .357 S&W Magnum is considered a high pressure pistol round, and surely cases sticking is a potential issue with revolvers, for which the .357 was designed.
