Wonder if it was someone's Groundhog and Crow rifle or their target rifle. Obviously was a .22.musket still marked on bottom of barrel and rebored to 25-20 single shot with a center fire breechblock. Bought on Gunbroker several years ago as a 25 cal. Was happy it proved out to be a 25-20 Single Shot. Mounted 16X Unertl on it and play with it every once in a while. 60 grain cast bullet at 50 yds with 8.3 IMR 4227 .

That is a sweet rig. Strong action let's you play with the loading some. I recently acquired a Stevens 44 in 25-20SS and get 50yd groups like that with an 87gr cast and AA#9. Like shooting a 22lr. Mine is shooter grade and looking for vintage scope for it.
Enjoy

Neat.  That's a pretty early musket, maybe pre-Winder.  What is the range of the SN (98XXX?) I'm just trying to learn year of production.

Since it is marked on the bottom of the barrel, can you tell us anything about the barrel being D&T or dovetailed for sights (on the bottom, would require removing front stock).  If D&T, are the holes near the receiver or are they where you might expect to find a barrel sight?

Also, what is barrel length?  Was it shortened to get rid of cut for rimfire extractor?

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Glad you added the picture! That's a pretty cool 1885! I wonder if it was converted by a gunsmith, or maybe at Winchester? Have you ever gotten a letter on the gun to see how it left the factory, or if it's ever been back? Or does this serial number fall into a range that could be lettered?
