From the various ads, catalogs, etc. I've seen over many decades it seems that Marlin and UMC had a very close relationship. Not sure of the basis of this relationship, but most early cartridges developed by or for Marlin were first offered by UMC, and Marlin quite often recommended the use of UMC ammo in their guns.
As did Remington and UMC, and it would be interesting to learn how much info concerning early associations between Marlin and UMC (and others) might be hidden away in Remington's closely guarded archives.
Side note: A now retired Winchester Olin ammunition salesman, who sets up at one of the small local shows, related a story about an experience he had when visiting a Winchester shotshell production plant. The plant foreman was escorting him and a few others around to various points in the production line, and at one point, the former salesman dipped his hand down into a big bin full of new empty 12 gauge hulls. The reason he says he remembers it so well is that when he tipped the hull up to look at the headstamp, he saw the name Remington stamped into the base of the hull, produced on the Winchester production line.
So... who actually knows (and ever will know) just exactly what agreements and short-term contracts were made at various times throughout the long history of U.S. ammunition production by each and all of the various companies, that kept the production lines humming along?
