What 22 rimfire barrel length and weight, shooting irons, is most common for an offhand rifle (Steven 44 1/2)?  Thanks

It is best to have the center of gravity, balance point of the rifle, between your feet and more toward the front foot. I have found a straight taper or part octagon gives good balance. 24” would probably be best but it doesn’t look right so 26” is a good compromise. It may not get the most velocity but it is better balanced and isn’t blowing in the wind as much.

Just got my old OH rifle out and measured it.   In times past, I have shot some pretty good scores with it.  At that time, I was 5'11" and 180#.  The bbl is right at 30", drop from line of sight to heel is 5.5 or 6" (varies a little between scope and irons),  LOP is 13", balance is 5-6" ahead of trigger (German Martini action), weight is 13 1/2 lb.  The bbl and fore-end together weigh 6.8#, and balance 12" from the breech.  Scope will add up to a couple pounds and only move the balance a little.   With a proper palm rest and butt hook, it holds like a feather, and will not wear you out to shoot 100+ shots/day.

Joe:

Would that not be a bit heavy out front for a .22 rimfire?
For the smaller caliber rifles I usually prefer a bit shorter: around 26 inches.

Keep in mind that Joe is still a young buck and to him, a rifle of 15, 16 pounds or more is a trifle for offhand  Wink

heavy enough to be stable - easy to see when the cross hairs don't move.  light enough to not wear you out.  I like 21" 1" dia.

FWIW,
A 22 LR Std velocity (is said to) burn its powder in 16"
for max velocity. that is why some people have made up rifles with short barrel and bloop tube to give sight radius.
Advantage is shorter barrel time so you don't wander off that Center before the bullet leaves the muzzle.

I've seen similar tests, but thye also show an increase in velocity up to 20" of barrel. So I'd guess if it's done burning powder at 16" it's still increasing velocity after the powder is burned.
I have a 20" .22LR barrel with 10" of "bloop tube" and it shoots as well as it did before the extra 10" was added. But it looks and balances much better with the extra 10" of .45 caliber barrel added to it.

I have a C.Sharps Low-Wall 22LR with a 26" Badger barrel, 1/16 twist mounting a Lyman Jr. TS 10x.  I use CCI Select 1200fps chronographed at 1163fps.

I am not a particularly accomplished offhand shooter, but on my CPA with the .22LR barrel I went with a 28" #3 half octagon and am quite happy with the choice.

My .32-40 barrel is a #4 half octagon, 28" and I like it too.  I prefer to use the #4 barrel with iron sights as it feels like the balance is better than with a scope.

I've often thought that it would be fun to make up a "schuetzen try-gun." I once saw a Winchester with a pine offhand stock that I think was probably made by Axel Peterson as a model but never finished. This is a shotgun try-gun;

I like that idea Bob, but I think a schuetzen "try gun" would need more adjustments. Like an adjustable height cheekpiece, and maybe adjustable buttplate length, and hooks? And maybe a palm rest mount that would allow fore and aft position adjustment? And maybe some weight to simulate barrel length and diameter?

Might want to consider how much you intend to shoot.it.  might want a little lighter barrel for the 100 shot.

I think Joe, nailed it! Note that Patriot says that he wants to shoot iron sights.

The 28+" barrel helps with that and the #3 weight holds the rifle weight down. He could also add a front sight extension. Personally, I like a lot of barrel weight and for myself, I would go with a #4 barrel.
