Wow! Msd's for black powder? Really? Your intelligence should warn you not to eat it, smoke it, or use it for anything other than what it was designed for. I wonder about the old timers on high looking over our shoulders at these remarks, rolling around, laughing their butts off! Like marlinguy, I had the same negative experience with pyrodex and a 51 navy colt (2nd gen). I just use swiss for rifles and trip7 for revolvers. Doesn't mean I'm not open to new advances in propellants or anything else, like cell phones, etc.

I'm sure there's plenty of guys still alive who are laughing at the MSD thing for gun powder too. I know I'm chuckling.

For those that might enjoy a more complete overview of the "BP subs" facts and issues...

An astute reader might notice that the inventor of Pyrodex, Dan Pawlak, had much more than the "small" market for muzzleloaders in mind, that is until it killed him, as it has others.

I have been shooting, almost exclusively, flintlocks for 40 years. I  have had 2 BPCR guns and now the new to me 1885 40-70 Ballard. I have never shot any of the sub powders and most likely never will. I have blackpowder guns and for me, that is what they should be shooting. however that is me. to each his own and whatever works best for you.

I shot only Swiss FFg and 1,5Fg in my BPCR rifle because that is what is required and would have done so anyway cause Swiss has always worked will for me when smaller groups at longer ranges were required.

In other situations, I sometimes used 777, especially when both Swiss FFg and 777FFg gave equally good groups at the target.

For muzzle loader seasons I used Pyrodex FFg because it shot smaller groups that Dupont FFg. Today I would likely use 777FFg.

Have used both Pyrodex FFg and 777FFg for trap shooting in 12 bore hammer doubles that shot good patterns with fiber and card wads (because those old guns had bores designed for good Mod and Full patterns with such shotshells). Even won BP trap one year at SASS annual in AZ.
