That little gal in pink with the big smile on her face shot a 5 on the buffalo with her 38-55.

Great pictures, second one looks like it is in front of the Restwell Motel in Forsythe.

That is where I stayed this year, nice place, nice people.

My wife has hit I think 6 out of 8 on the buffalo at Quigley with her .38-55.  We're using a bit more bullet, a 360 grain at 1375 fps.  The load is either 21 or 24 gr of 4198; don't have my book to check it.  Either is a safe load, I have used much hotter loads than that in it.  The final load was selected to match the ballistics of the .38-72 using black powder.

The windage and elevation settings are identical to my 540 grain .45-90 at the same velocity.

The disadvantage of the .38, as mentioned by others, is that it's hard to spot the misses, particularly in the grass or if it's muddy.  And, harder to spot the hits on the steel, particularly in the white.

The accuracy of the .38, and the ballistics, are equal to the larger bullets.  But, doing well at Quigley is about spotting, and the .38 is harder to spot for.

She is a Happy Camper for sure.  Hope to see you all again next June, probably going to stay at the Restwel again, convenient for
getting dinner at the area restaurants and a very nice place to stay.

Yes, but don't mention anything about how you two shoot at the Baker or the Ekalaka shoot with those things...   Roll Eyes The wind with it's multiple directions and intensity there dwarfs what the Quigley ever sees and one of you is generally on top...
(This last weekend his sister took first - womens, #10 in the overall with 47 total shooters?)

Ballistics one thing what works in matches can be another. Disadvantage to the lighter bullet guns is spotting strikes, if spotting conditions are good and you have a good spotting outfit then no disadvantage.   What the shooter shoots well is another, if they are comfortable with 38 calibers they will probably shoot 38s better than the big guns.

Look at match equipment paired up with results larger caliber guns generally do better distances longer  than 500 yards. There are exceptions, again generally , under 500 heavy recoilers more power than needed is a disadvantage.

Boats,
All of what you are saying is very true, what we see time and again, is the heavy bullet, heavy caliber, have their wins by those (like me) that shoot occasionally- generally due to our schedule and life - don't get me wrong, a majority of the shooters following this religion shoot a 45 cal of some variation including those on top regularly.  Those that use their discretionary time to practice and become very familiar with their rifles, practice in the wind - not just on the nice days - make these small calibers like the 38-55 very effective out to 1000 yds - it's not occasionally that it happens.  So the  OP asked will it go, yes it will, if your not going to spend a little time with it though, go with the 40 or the 45 - I have a 45-60 with a 485g Postell that is showing a lot of promise and the recoil is very moderate.
I shot a 40-65 Win at a long range match a few years ago, 800, 900 and 1000yds and did as well with it as I've done with my 45-90 - the winds were not light.  I practiced several times leading up to it, had to hold L or R because my sight only had 16 minutes of wind so it can be done - and I had a great spotter - Wink

My daughter and her husband stopped at the Quigley this year on the way back from Yellowstone. They wanted to find out what it is all about.  Here is a picture of her shooting my 38-50 Hepburn with 56 grains of black powder. I'm guessing probably around 1250-1275 fps. I don't have a crony, never used one. It was the first gong target that she ever shot at and she hit the buffalo 4 out of 7 times. You should be able to do 50% with a 38-55 with a little bit of experience. She went four for four on the diamond and three out of four on the number five target which I consider to be very difficult. Like I mentioned earlier, all bets are off if the grounds are wet or it's very windy.

Nice Hepburn. Doesn’t look very muddy, must have been before the rains.

Man it was a mess wasn't it, couldn't believe how quick it got that gummy, and how quick it turned around after the rain quit.

Glad I had my muck boots with me.

I think I have my wife talked into making the trek to MT for the Quigley next year.  I made up a Uberti HW for her to shoot in local matches that go out to 400 yards.  It's in 38-55 with the 2.125" chamber.  28" barrel with a 1;15 twist.  I had a 330 gr. mold made for it that has worked well.  The Quigley goes out to 800+ yards.  One load with IMR 3031 pushed it out a bit over 1400 FPS; any opinions on that making the distance?

You should have no problem at 1000yd.
Have some BACo 360gr Money bullets in 20-1 you are welcome to try. They shot well in a 15" twist, 28" long Badger barrel last year. PM me if you would like to try them.
