My Home Created Muzzle Loading Slug Gun

Yeah I know this is a Schuetzen web site but I bought the 45 caliber gain twist barrel/false muzzle and bullet starter and it had Russ Hooks name on a barrel flat in magic marker! No other markings? The walnut stock cost me $4 as it was already cut for a Hawken rifle and it took me 4 months to get it assembled/ The Unertl scope I found in a pawn shop in Arkansas for a great price. Once I tried to go out to 200 yards I found I needed taller blocks and now it shoots 4 inch groups at 300 yards with 80 grains of Goex FFG and a Creedmoor 540 grain bullet.

Way cool!  I have an under hammer by John Braxton with a .38 call barrel on it. Lyman STS completes the rig. I like yours. It looks great! moodyholler

Good looking rig.... Don't suppose you want to part with the scope?

No thank you as I just got finished putting in new cross hairs due to an accident several weeks ago at the range when a huge wind gust blew my extra targets box into the rifle and it fell over and banged the scope! I used some 0.0005 tungsten wire......really hard to see!

Nothing quite like "rolling your own".

Yeah! That is a nice slug gun, glad you're enjoying it the way it was meant to be, not gazed at up on the wall. I have a Billinghurst action going on to an old Douglas .45 false muzzle barrel along with this old timer I found in Vermont. It was reblued by the previous owner in 1956. Still going strong!

I have a chunk gun that I put a very fancy walnut stock on that came with a 50 caliber 1 in 48 Douglas XX stainless steel barrel. It came with false muzzle and starter and it was made for a shooter up in WI years ago. It will put patched round balls in a 4 inch circle at 200 yards! I made a 20# shooter as the barrel is 1.5 inches across the flats!

I wonder how many of us on this forum share an interest in the muzzle loading chunk guns from the old days. You know, those target rifles with thick barrels, target sights and set triggers. Maybe we should start a new thread about our favorites and see if there's any interest?

There are a few X Slug Gun competitors on the site who might share an interest but it should probably be posted in the off topic section all though I wouldn't have an issue with it being discussed here. The off topic section has been a bit busy lately and it might end up getting lost.

The main reason I posted this here was due to the barrel having Russ Hooks' name on one of the barrel flats in magic marker! I imagine most people here know who he is and as far as I know he is kicking himself for letting this barrel go?

The barrel is a gain twist that ends at 1 in 15 at the muzzle but has no markings and I think it is a Ron Smith made beauty but Russ can't remember where or from whom he got it.

Now John, maybe not so off topic. The only difference between these and a Pope rifle with a false muzzle could be said is that the slug gun has the "brass case" over the firing pin and the Pope has the brass case in front of the firing pin;-)

Like the leather built up cheek piece on the stock. Have an old welders apron in decent shape so could either do it your way or wrap it around the British Enfield 303 stock and use felt under the leather to raise it up. Those old enfields do leave a lot to be desired as to getting a proper cheek weld. Anyway right nice rifle. bet it does kick some though. Frank
