Mould Needed

Print Post
I have a rifle in the works that is complete except for throating, and that is awaiting an appropriate bullet, which depends on my getting a good mould.  The chamber is a .32 RKS, barrel a RKS gain twist to about 11.5  My goal is a Paul Jones style spitzer.

I have run into a brick wall in search for a mould maker.  I initially contacted three and got responses from Brooks and Mos.  David Mos agreed to make a mould, but subsequently sent my payment back and said he was moving to Texas for a new job.  Brooks has not responded to a letter.  Leeth and Hoch have not responded to phone messages.  In each case a drawing provided by my gunsmith was enclosed.

I am an old shooter, and try to be fair and considerate in my dealing with people.   I try to communicate in this manner.  I would welcome any constructive, practical advice.  If I am not successful in getting a good mould, I am going to abandon this project.  I have other interests, and am not inclined to go through a seemingly endless hassle over this.

Paul

This is a exact copy of the PJ mold for your twist rate:

It's a brass mold, NOE also has it in aluminum, as well as multi-cavity.

NOE also, makes the 14 twist version of this bullet mold.

Might contact ASSRA member Jim Borton and see if he's willing and able to make the mold.

Maybe, your gunsmith could look through the choices at Accurate molds to see if something looks interesting. They cold tell you which mold number to order, and what diameters to designate on the bands. Maybe, your smith could recommend their top two choices cut in the same block?

I'd second the recommendation for Tom at Accurate molds. He's made a few for me according to my dimensions. They all work well.

Leo from Boomer Moulds has a copy of my Paul Jones 235 grain spitzer I use in my 11.5:1 twist RKS barrel.

His moulds are not very expensive but they are not highly polished like a Paul Jones Mould.

I'm another Accurate Molds fan. I have several and they're all I could ask for. Tom is easy to work with to get the bullet you want. Plus his lead time is short.

I've not seen many of Accurate's molds in the winners circle though, while there are many PJ's there.

I'd be curious if the NOE mold was under consideration. An Accurate mold could be another option as is Boomers? It seems like the project has gone quite a way to give up so easily?

edit to add, the Borton also.

Tom is great, but makes no spitzer molds. The smallest flat point bullet mold he sells is like 3/16" I believe.

Thanks mg, I was aware about Accurate not doing pointed noses, I thought, it looks like a Hoch was under consideration. I personally don't think I would have gotten so close to the finish of a project to end up walking away. Somehow or another, I'd want to try the new rifle out, and I think I would have had bullets ready to go before I got the rifle

I doubt this one would get shooting for another month or two under the best of situations, it could just be that some of the mold makers are on the road here and there competition shooting? Pioneer might be another one to take a look at since CPA has decided to work with them? What if a mold that is thought to be ideal is finally tracked down, and it just doesn't shoot like hoped.

I'm not quite sure why people are trying to promote almost any other mold maker than NOE, when the OP states that his goal is a PJ style mold, made for the 11.5 twist.

NOE came on board with us, a few years ago, to make molds, specifically for our sport and has recreated molds that are unavailable from Lyman/Ideal, Paul Jones, Egan and others. I think NOE needs our support, especially when someone asks for something that NOE has.

I agree with your thoughts Frank, even if a fellow just prefers to take a different direction. It was my first thought, but you had already mentioned it. Maybe, he has a tighter groove barrel, who knows.

Not only can the gunsmith drawing be directly compared to the NOE drawing, but it seems like the gunsmith is offering throating options. Maybe, get some shooting in before the month is out. It would be nice to know how it works out.
