Trapdoor carbine 45-70

What would be a good deer load in a Springfield trapdoor carbine 45-70? I would like to use blackpowder, maybe with a 500 grain bullet. Would the 45-70 500 grain be too much for the carbine?

I suggest that especially for a TD Carbine,
use a 400 grain bullet which was found to be good
in the lighter carbine.  Will be Plenty for Deer
out to typical woods ranges, 100yds,etc
Yes, I killed a lot of deer with 45-70 and 385 gr cast bullet
at out to 100 yds

I like a little lighter bullet in the carbine.  I would hate to spoil my offhand for life  Cheesy. I used one for hunting many years ago.  I think the bullets were around 400. I know they were not the 525.

My original carbine shoots way better with the 500 grn. gov.
Lyman bullet than the  405 both shot with black and even though it is a round nose the deer can't tell the difference

The Government used 405 gr bullets in the carbine load, reason was recoil. It will kill deer and you won’t be shooting much distance due to the trajectory. Only reason to use something else is go even lighter looking for more recoil reduction. I used to load a 330 gr intended for lever action 45/70 for My very light H&R Officers model reproduction.  It worked well in my Original Trapdoor Carbine and Cadet model too. Not a good black powder bullet I loaded it smokeless.

All things considered hard to improve on the Goverments Carbine choice, Black Powder & 405 gr.

I own a M1886 Take Down Light weight in 45-70 Nickle Steel
barrel, it only weighs 6.9 Lbs. When I first acquired it I started out with 405 Gr. Jacketed Bullets with a stiff load of 3031. Shot super, clover leaf groups from 50 Yds. to 100 Yds. with little Elevation loss. Kicked a Little but I ignored it, thought to
myself, "Won't be shooting it that much" Well for the next 3 years I missed what should have been easy Shots at Deer up in Maine. Finally said "Am I flinching?" NAH! well went to a 300 Gr. Speer bullet and a reasonable load of 45 Gr. 4064. Wow, shot as good as the other load and was pleasant to shoot. Next trip to Maine took a nice 4 point Buck in about 15 minutes of my first day, BAH! Hunt is over. I have a plan right now to build a Carbine using some Engraved Action parts and I will load it with the 325 Gr, Gould Hollow Point. I have shot this bullet in Trapdoor Rifles in the past and they shot very good out to 100 yds. HTH Regards, FITZ. OLD TUCK. Wink

Tuck 330 bullet I used was from a Raphine mold, copy of the Gould bullet except flat point no HP. It’s a great bullet.  I never tried it with BP figured it would take too much black to fill the case. It was very accurate with light charges of Unique.

It’s a fact you have to hit them before any load is effective. Less recoil adequate power will outperform every time.

Accurate Molds has a 335 gr. bullet such as you describe. It has a nice wide flat point. It shoots as well as I can see the sights in my 45-70's.

There is a 315 Gr. bullet from Lyman 457191 that for many years I considered the Gould Hollow point without the Hollow Point. I have shot just as the Gould and it shot just as well. Easier to cast. It is not an exact copy the Grease Grooves are narrower. Cast's .459 if I remember right. Been a while. It has done well for me in every 45-70 I have tried it in as has the Gould @ 330 Gr. FITZ. And don't forget - all Pedersoli barrels including the Trapdoors are match grade

Generally the reproduction 330 g Gould bullets are .459 used with smokeless powder they need to be a bit oversized, they don’t bump up. Arsenal 405 used with black should use a softer alloy and be a bit smaller too. It can bump up to suit the Original barrel.

Not hard rules, individual Guns and bullets may be different. Rule of thumb
