ISSA Iron Sight Bench Rest

Randy, Please correct me if I am wrong.

Believe Randy Wright(RSW) shot the fifty shot bench iron sight match using black powder and a traditional rifle.
He shot a very respectable score (8th Place). Beat the heck out of me.
Did not see him wipe the bore a single time. Did see a blow tube.
Great shooting like it was done in the old days. Let us know the secrets.

Yes, Randy used black powder with a blow tube. I was out back, and when I heard a boom I thought someone's gun had blown up, and so I went out to check, but luckily it was just Randy shooting black. So then Randy handed me his camera and I made two videos of him loading and shooting.

Just so the record is clear; I shot the iron sight offhand event with a 38-55 Ballard and black powder. And yes I did shoot the whole match, from initial fouling shot through my final record shot (about 65 rounds total) without cleaning. I did give the barrel one toot with my blow tube between shots. The bore was no more fouled after the 65th shot than it was after the second shot.
I breech seated a 295 grain bullet, 1.16" long, cast 1:20, pan lubed with SPG Tropical. My load was 4.5 grains SR4759 followed by 48.5 grains Swiss 1.5 (weighed) trickled through a 24" drop tube. In the remainder of the case was a milk carton wad, an oleo wad (also SPG Tropical) and topped with a very thin card wad punched from old IBM punch card material which when pressed in place was flush with the case mouth. The void between the breech seated bullet base and the case mouth was filled with a dry felt wad about .09".
One other clarification, I may have finished 8th in the iron sight BR event but I finished first in my class shooting offhand with black powder.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

Joe - SPG Tropical is a modification of standard SPG lube to give it a higher melting point. I had been doing some testing of it for Larry Baker. Whatever ingredient(s) raised the melting temperature seems to work. This time of year I normally have to keep my lubed bullets in an ice chest while at the range, not with SPG Trop. I leave my bullet box out on the bench top even in our 90-100 Az heat.
SPG Sales had it for sale at the BPCR silhouette match at NRA WC (Raton) last week.
