Well I have 10 of the most pretty 45-70 shells you guys have ever seen.

I went to the range on Thursday morning. Shot the Winchester 52 first. To windy for a good target. I think I was in to much of a hurry to shoot the 45-70.

First 45-70 cartridge hits a little high and to the left. Same sight settings I have been using for smokeless powder. Second shot lands 1/2 inch to the right of the first shot. Did not wipe between shots. Slip 3rd one in chamber no problem without wiping. All 10 shots without wiping, well from the 3rd through the 10th went all over the place. Ten shots without wiping can make for a hard to clean barrel. Won't be doing that again.

As I see it you only have four options with BP,
#1  Wipe between shots
#2  Blow tube between shots
#3  Use a grease cookie under the bullet
#4  Duplex loading.

First time to get out and shoot since my Aug 25 post.

Have added and changed some things.
#1 powder weight is still 65 gr of goex 2f, but instead of dumping it in the case and compressing it I used a beard trimmer to vibrate the case and powder, dropped the powder level down quite a bit before I put the card in the case. Very little compression now.
#2 Changed the front sight to a Lyman 17 AUG
#3 Changed rear sight to Lee Shaver Economy Model Mid Range.
#4 Wiped the bore after each shot, Target at bottom of post. First 3 rounds were low off target. Next 2 were high. Next 5 were in the black. Target was shot at 50 yds. Next outing I will try to tighten the group up before I move the target further out.

Loaded 10 cartridges with the 65 grn charge with the vibration.
With that stated on the last 3 rounds I noticed how sticky the base of my bullets were. On the 8,9,& 10 I wiped the bases off to the point that they were not sticky. In my reading here and other boards I have seen reference to a wax paper placed over the wad. How are the wax papers cut? Do you just take a casing and tap it to cut the paper or is there something I have missed.

You might like to purchase a press mounted type wad punch which will enable you to cut wads from different materials such as LDPE or cardboard in different thicknesses to experiment with, the one I have was made by Cornell I think and has served me well for many years. I also use this wad cutter to make paper wads that go on top of the over powder wad to stop it sticking to the base of the bullet.
As for primers it pays to experiment as different types can make quite a difference. In my case in my 40/65 I have settled on Federal 155 LMP primers, Remington 2 1/2 large pistol primers also showed promise but are now unavailable where I live. In my previous 45/90 Federal GM215M primers worked well, so as you can see there are no hard and fast rules, you rifle and your targets will tell the tale, it's  long journey, take your time and enjoy it.
Mike.
PS. If you don't already have one get a chronograph and keep detailed records of all loads tried, only changing one thing at a time is a very good idea as well.
