IMR 4227
Jul 23rd, 2018 at 2:19pm
Print Post
My last match, I found myself cutting grains in my powder measure much more than usual.  I had topped off my measure with a new unopened pound of IMR 4227 and wondered if that was the cause.  When I got home I dumped a bit of that 1 pound can out and compared it to that of the 8 pound keg I had been using.  Think the pictures tell the story.  The 8-pounder says it's from Australia and the 1-pounder says it's from Canada.  Anyone else ever run across this?

Regards, Joe

If the weight density is equal between the 1# & 8# - same powder but just a different shape

If it were me, & it's not, I'd keep them separate for sure. Next, I'd try out my loads & hope like hell I didn't have to start over figuring out what my rifle wanted...........again  Wink
Bought some H-4198 once in 1 lb jugs, & after loading a bunch up, found that it didn't look or behave like what I'd been using. Appears that it was IMR 4198 that got mis-packaged. Dark color & longer grained. Worked good in the 222, but sucked in my 30 BR, which was what I bought it for. Oops I guess. At least the burn rates were close so no danger.

A lot of powders were consolidated when Hodgdon bought IMR. I think IMR 4227 was discontinued, is now actually the Hodgdon blend. I could easily have it backwards.

This is a good resource to check powders with phots and composition. If you have an idea of when the lots were manufactured, it's helpful.

Not too surprising really ... Canadians tend to be shorter than Australians as a general rule ... (sorry, couldn't help myself) ...

Joe. The inconsistencies of Imr 4227 is the reason I do not use it anymore. With a recommendation from John Louis I switched to 300 MP. Using 300 MP I have shot 250 targets in two rifles. Keith

Maybe I missed something here, but thought the 8 pounder from Australia had the shorter grains while the one pounder from Canada had the longer grains.  Huh

Gee, I guess I will have to review the alternatives when
I finally use up the last of my last 20# keg of DuPont 4227.

Yes, your right. They discontinued IMR and replaced it with H but, relabled H to IMR.

Confusing, I know but, I believe the reason was that IMR had such a good reputation over a long, long period of time.

The only reason they would do that, is that H cost them less.

I had a partial can of real IMR and poured it into a full can of the "new" IMR, now I have a can marked ? Sad

Always check to see where it was made!

I dispense my powder with an Autoscale.
It does not cut powder kernels regardless of size.
Rather than fault 4227 of one type or another I would fault your rotating drum measure.
The Autoscale will even dispense the huge SR4759 grains and the long H4831grains without cutting one single grain.

But, how do they work in outdoor match conditions, with or w/o Electricity?

Australians should be taller.  They hang upside down all day everyday.  Up top, Canadians are being compressed by gravity  Roll Eyes
