If you run it through the worst powder measure you can find, when yer finished it'll all be uniformly short. There, my work here is finished. Cheesy

Because then all of it will cut too many grains Joe

Regards, Joe

How do I identify the long grain 4227 that cuts?  I have some new stuff with a black plastic cap.

Joe,
Look on the can (plastic bottle Smiley ) and see where it was made.

If it's the original IMR 4227 (short grain) it will say made in Canada.

If it's the longer grain, it will say, made in Australia and is actually H4227. Hodgdon only sells H4227, packaged in IMR 4227 cans.

That change was made about 5 years ago and the IMR can still be found found in plastic ans but, it will be older than that. CHECK the can, to see where it was made.

I buy all my 4227 at gun shows now. If it's in a metal can, your safe but, you gotta check toughs plactic ones if you want REAL IMR 4227!

Seriously, I've used each of the recent itterations of 4227 and never noticed any difference in how they measure. The tool of choice for that powder here at my house is an elderly Lyman 55 that has been used for that powder and 2400 for as long as I remember. About every five years I take it apart and wax the innards.
I haven't had any trouble with it, except the time I tried to measure some 4759. Not good. Nothing I've ever owned measures that stuff to my satisfaction.

All though now probably a mute case with the 4759 being discontinued the Belding & Mull was the best Powder Measure I had found for that purpose. As well as some other hard to measure stick powders back when I was still re-loading for my 25-06 Hunting Rifle and now long gone.

I should  not have mentioned that other powder. My point was that some measures work pretty well with the 4227s. That's all.

My miss understanding CF my Harrell Schuetzen measure did a nice job of metering 4227 back when I was doing extensive testing of all the various powders. I have also seen several using a Lyman 55, Redding BR and the Beldiing & Mull with good success and the one I started out with and used for several years.
