the art of shooting with the rifle

this little book is to be recommended from amazon.
by sir henry halford, written in 1888, its contents exceed it small size.
it is the distilled essence of halfords experience until writing the book, and as such is heavy going as it offers so much.
halford worked a lot with william metford, another great of the era.
he covers basics, a thing we all need to focus on .
keep safe,
bruce.

Tremendous little tome.   It is my bible for wind-doping.   Every one should have one, along with FWM's book.

Up here in Canada Amazon lists it from several vendors, but starting at $89.00!  I checked a used book site I frequent (ABE Books) and there is a used copy at an American books store for $14.95 ... plus $15.00 shipping.  By the time that would land up here in Canada with exchange and the Canada Customs "bite" it would likely cost me well over $50 ...

Shocked

I may have passed my "Best Before" date, but I haven't quite reached my "Expiry" date yet ...

Yes, bpjack, you rascal, but the price of the book is $395.00!  Worse yet, as we say in the trade, "first, edition, first printing THUS" - i.e., it's one of those "library shelf leathers", printed in 2009, and not worth the likely bonded leather it's bound in.

In other words, garbage. At one time, must have been 3 or 4 publishers churning out these "genuine leather" eds., though Wolfe is the only one I remember.  More often than not, the titles selected for re-printing weren't the very rare ones, but the well-known "crowd pleasers," that could be bought in 1st eds. for less than these cheezy reprints.

Sir Henry Halford (1828-1897) - "The country owes to him the debt which is due to a man who made the science of rifles, as well as the practice of rifle-shooting, the main pursuit of his life, who without thought of pecuniary advantage, laboured without ceasing to discover all that could be discovered about the infantry weapon and to bring that weapon to a state of perfection." The Times, 5 January 1897

I have several articles about (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links), including a reprint of an interview with him from 1893.
