Load for a 45-70 Peabody?

I have recently come into a 45-70 peabody rifle. It's in very nice condition. I want to shoot it but am worried about recoil. I'd appreciate suggestions for load that won't recoil heavily. Bullet mould? Bullet weight? Powder type / weight? I have no experience with the 45-70. Fear of hungry lawyers aside, I'd appreciate any suggestions.

I have one of the Peabody-Martini carbines in 45-70.  I shoot 300 grain bullets and the recoil is not at all bad.  Lyman 457191 and the Saeco or RCBS 300s all shoot very well.  Use published Trapdoor loads and be happy.

You didn't mention which Peabody you have in 45-70.  Is it a Connecticut Militia model?  If so, you will probably find that the bore is a bit over size.  I have one and had the dickens of a time finding an accurate black powder load. I would have to dig out my notes to be sure, but think the groove diameter is around 0.461 or there abouts.   I didn't have a mould that size so went to a soft lead paper patched bullet of about 460 grains.  Shoots very accurately and recoil is not all that bad.

I have another Peabody which was originally a "Spanish" model with a trashed chamber.  I had that rebarreled to 45-70 and it shoots quite well.  I have been using the Lyman 457193 bullet (420 grains) and it works quite well.  Haven't tried smokless powder in it.

Connecticut models have Henry rifling. It is not gain twist.  None of the Peabody's, sporting or military,  have factory gain twist rifling.

For years I have loaded 15 grains of Unique behind a 300 grain Lyman bullet with no complaints. MY 45-70s are a Pedersoli and an original Trapdoor.
