My only three rifles. All very early 1868’s

Here are my three single shot breechloaders.
Each is an early US Model 1868 Springfield trapdoor.
Notice the serial number on each one as well as the 1868 date of manufacture on each breech block.
There were only approximately 150 of these trials rifles produced in 1868. Only 19 of them are known to have survived so far.

Thanks Joe. Yes, they managed to survive 150 years intact. I have yet to shoot any of them though. I do have the Lee mold and brass cases.
Serial number 6 was made with some blued parts, like the trigger,  guard and screws, barrel bands & screws, retaining springs and swivels and forend cap.
It also has a different rear sight and cleaning rod that were being considered for the production run.

Ballards may be weaker,

Thanks guy’s. I’m happy to share them with you!
After over 45 years of searching for an example with an 1868 stamped breech block, I finaly Forest Gump’d my way across all three within a year, a couple of years back.
Funny how it worked out like that. And, what are the odds they’d be One, Two and Three digit serial numbered rifles.
Yes, a full set I guess. When I sell them, I think all three ought to go together.
In the mean time, I’m going to shoot each one when I’m done with all the honey do’s that I’ve been tasked with on our ranch.

Wow what an interesting story having taken 45 years to accomplish your long term dream and for it to be finally realized in one and then to have it turn out the way it did for you is well beyond truly amazing.
