A. O. Zischang Borchardt

On the back of a Post started by "ballardhepburnmich" I thought I'd share a few photos ...

I recently bought a Borchardt rifle modified by A. O. Zischang.  The rifle is fairly standard but the wood- and metal-work are by Zischang.

The action has had its sides and lower tang re-profiled.  The upper tang was replaced by Zischang with his own removable upper tang with integral rear sight base.  Unfortunately this rifle does not have Zischang's double-set triggers.  This rifle kept it's original trigger - safety setup.

The rifle has also been restocked by Zischang.  The buttplate is a large nickel-plated swiss-type buttplate.  The grip cap is horn.  The forearm is not checkered but the buttstock has the fine checkering I've seen on other Zischang rifles.

I believe the barrel is a replacement, but it is an original Sharps sporting rifle barrel.  The top flat is marked, " [Old Reliable]  SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT, CONN. "  The caliber marking is on the left flat simply marked, " CAL. 40  2 1/2 ".  The number stamped on the bottom flat does not match the serial number on the action.  The bore is good, however I have not shot this rifle yet.

Gorgeous Borchardt Joe! That grip cap looks a lot like the grip cap done on my 1881 Marlin E. Flues rifle, built by Emil Flues of Bay City, Mi.

Zischang's buttplates are pretty unique, and easily identifiable!
