Short of slugging the bore is there anyway to tell if a No.1 Sporter is 40-50 straight or 40-50 bottle neck?

You should be able to tell by looking down the bore. you might have to fiddle with the light source.

Here's a diagram of the 40-50 Sharps Straight.  Do a chamber cast and if it doesn't match - you have a 40-50 bottleneck

the 40-50 straight has a base diameter of about .460" and the 40-50 Bottleneck has a base diameter of about .500"

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Look in the chamber. The Straight is a straight wall chamber and the Bottleneck is a bottleneck in the chamber.
