.40-60 Maynard?

I have a chance to buy a C. Sharps 1875 Sharps in .40-60 Maynard that I wish to shoot BP silhouette. I eventually will PP as I now do with my .45-70. Does anyone have experience with loading this round regarding quirks, performance, etc.?  Thank you.

It is the smartest, best, most accurate, easiest BPCR round I load for.  Making 40-60 brass from Krag brass is one step easy.    ...Okay! Two step. Fireform and trim.

If magically I could go back in time to start over, but knowing everything I know now, the 40-60 Maynard, (especially) built and chambered by Michael Lewis is how I would start.

I just loaded 180 of these today for this weekend....

(it is well suited to 16 twist barrels. Don't let anyone talk you into something faster  ...OR slower either.)

I have one in a Whitney Phoenix with an 18 twist barrel. I found that the 18 twist would not perform well with a greater than 370 grain bullet. Once that was settled, the first match I shot with it got me a 30. As he said easy to fire form and easy to load. If you have a 16 twist there is probably nothing that it won't do.

I have one in a CPS Stevens with a Krieger barrel, in the two years that I have had it I have put about 5000 BP rounds through it. I have found this calibre easier to get to perform than either the 40/65 or the 45/70.
My current load is 60 gr of PP Wano under a 400 gr Money Bullet from a BACo mould, I have found that in my rifle Federal 155 LMP primers have proved best.
Today I shot a ten shot group at 100 m that measured 1.200" and all were in the ten ring.
Hopefully this load may prove to be a good starting load in your rifle, perhaps I should mention that I only shoot fixed ammo, I tried breech seating but it was too much work with having to clean the case each shot and gave almost no accuracy advantage in MY RIFLE .  The only problem I have encountered has been obtaining suitable brass as 30/40 Krag brass is not available here in Australia and .303 British does not chamber in my rifle without a lot of case turning.
Hope this helps.
Mike.

I have 2 ,CPA 40-60 with a 16 twist and a  Custom Browning BPCR with a 14.5 twist. They are accurate and easy to load.

I have a .40-60 Maynard CPA with a 16:1 twist Douglas barrel and I shoot 49.7 grains of Swiss FFFg at 1,250 fps with a 427 grain Paul Jones Creedmore bullet.

I prefer the straight walled cases to load (less twisting of wads - lighter powder loads)and find there is no difference in performance compared to the .40-65 WCF.

I use .30-40 Krag cases to make my .40-60 Maynards.

The .40-65 bullet is a 410 grain Boomer Money bullet.

Well, that's settled. Basically, I wanted an off-hand chicken shooter that would knock down rams. I have a ram shooter (.45-70 PP, 81 gr 1.5 Swiss) that I have to use shooting chickens, albeit a lighter PP bullet and charge. I wuz looking to build a .40-50 Straight for PP but this came along. Thank you for your response. Tom

I have a Rem Hepburn with a 16 twist Douglas, have not had much time with it yet, But the only bullet to give a group worth claiming so far is the Lyman 410660 { the pointy bore-rider} with 54 gr 1f Goex, and CCI br2 in rem krag cases anyone know of a similar bullet that does not take up too much space in the case I might try,it's one of my silhouette guns so 500 is far enough, thanks

That bullet was very accurate in my 16 twist 40-65 - out to 300 yards. Beyond that the wind would play games with it. Try the Saeco #740 which gave me very low SDs or the Old West NASA II.

Thanks for the reply "Oneatatime" I have the "snover" and the 410655, also Saeco 640, and RCBS 40-350, They are good molds, and shoot OK but they seat deeper than the bore rider in the case I,m compressing .3 with a milk carton wad.  Was wondering if  another 40 cal mold existed that seats  shallower in the case without going custom ?

The BACo  400 gr Money bullet I mostly use is mould # JIM409400M4  I seat it with first three driving bands and grease grooves out of the case, At this eating depth, which is .365"deep there is not a lot of compression on the powder with my .060" LDPE wad, powder charge is either 60 gr of PP Wano or 58 gr of Swiss 1 1/2 ( #4 ).
The COAL at this setting is 3.225" and may, or may not, chamber easily in your rifle, costs nothing to try though.
Mike.

Mick; Thanks for your reply , I went to the BACO web site and looked the mold up ,looks very interesting , I may give it a try as the bands are all .408 on my mold this one should allow more powder in the case, thanks again.

Shermo
Actually the bands are .409" according to BACo's catalogue, when cast using my 20-1 alloy they are about halfway between 408 and 409", I then run them through a Lee .408" sizer just so all are uniform. I did try them unsized  but  the results were not quite as good.

In my 40/60 Maynard with the Baco 400 grain Kidwell bullet I load 64 grains of Swiss 1.5 or 66 grains of OE 1.5 and its a ram killer.

Got my '75 C. Sharps .40-60 Maynard. Hiwall, what number is your BACO 400gr Kidwell bullet? I was thinking the tapered first band 420 gr Money bullet would be good to try. Thanks.
