Unertl scope question
May 20th, 2018 at 1:15pm
Print Post
Can anybody help me out finding the specs for this model of Unertl?  Also, is it too short for conventional barrel mounting?  I am thinking of putting a removable scope on my 44 1/2 in 23/35 so that I can use the iron sights easier when I want to change for hunting deer or use the scope for antelope..  I had a Model 52 Winchester in the 70's that I put a Small Game 6x on but don't remember much about the scope as I shot it mostly with target sights.   What Model of Unertl or any other maker would anybody suggest for hunting with?  Tom

For once I believe the sales pitch--that it IS a one of a kind custom job!  Maybe inspired by one of about the same length offered by Fecker & specifically intended for mounting on a bolt-action rcvr.  I once had one of the Feckers, but sold it after concluding there was no way I could make use of it.

Suspect this will go sky-high.

That's what I was afraid of as it really looks short!  Tom

I saw that scope on eBay.  Seller is not too far from me and seems to have a lot of stuff for sale.

Can’t say exactly what it is, appears to be a Vulture, they were short, but had more power. Could be something custom for 6 power limited bench rest matches. The other more common short external adjustment Unertl is a BV 20 x.  It may be a power reduced BV but my guess its a Vulture.  I ran a BV on one of my CPA rifles for a while it did not do well on the standard 7.2 inch space barrel mounted blocks. Eye relief a problem .

Seemed way over priced to me, but if you want to hunt with a lower power Unertl not many choices.  I have a 3x Small game on a Marlin 39a, be suitable for a light single shot too. I think it’s a great scope.  Also have a large Varmit 10 x on one of my CPA rifles. Could consider it a hunting scope if big and heavy is acceptable and 10x is not too much. Not a lot available in between.

With then demise of Precesion Shooting Magazine don’t see anything about 6 x bench rest & all I knew about it was the match reports.

Guess it depends on what game and the expected range & conditions. None of the external adjustment Unertl scopes are water proof

Well, what Unertl isn't?  If it's a "one of," as the lack of a ser. no. suggests, then it's worth more as a rarity than as one to shoot with.

I made a major effort to make use of a 14" Stevens 438 because it was in such pristine cond.  But it, too, I gave up on & sold because there was no way to get the eyepiece back far enough for proper eye relief.  Such short scopes are definitely cute, but they have their practical limitations.

It appears to be the same scope that was sold by Remington many years ago. If it is you cannot mount it on a single shot rifle. There is not enough eye relief. They were made to mount on the model 700 Remington. I had one, been there, done that, got the T-Shirt. All this was covered once before. Check the Eye relief if you actually have the scope. If not, pass it up.

Not at all custom by far and it was offered in their catalog unfortunately I gave mine to a friend or I would have posted a copy of what it was called.

I think the Remington short external adjustment was made by Remington. Looked Unertl but not.  Don’t have my Strobels gunsight and scope book at hand, but that’s how I remember it.

That 6 X has been on eBay for a long time no buyers.  Not likely to fit anything but a bolt action will limit market.

Remington was indeed different and soley developed for benchrest competition. All though a bit different the Unertl BV 20 pretty much served the same purpose for use on bolt action rifles per say.

John one of the old precision shooting annuals had a piece about the Remington scopes. Did Mike Walker design them ?   All this from memory take me some time to dig out the actual details. May be the first ones were hybrid Remington-Unertl. Something about the mounts in the photo not quite Unertl to my eye.

Have to have a better look and do some research to know sure.

Yes it is my understanding it was an undertaking by Mike Walker for benchrest shooting. It been quite some time since I read the article. But over on Benchrest Central if you do a search there is quite a bit of information shared by a collector and if memory serves me right a fellow who was involved in the project with Mike Walker.
