I have had a couple of black powder cans like that over the years, still have one. I had always been told that it is the kind of can used in the old general stores to sell powder out of. They would sell it by the metal cap full. That is what I was always told anyway.

Smudge Pot? Well, that's not very glamorous.
The condition of it leads me to believe that it's not.
Seems pretty small for a smudge pot?
I've got an old set of three that still have their nice shiny red paint and the mounting bracket that holds them to the kick panel, each is 4 1/2" in diameter and the same in height, not counting the neck.
Considering the intended use of a smudge pot to keep plants and orchards from frost damage, the size seems much too small to do any good?

I hazily seem to recall from my youth that in pre flare days small pots were set out on the highway for nighttime accidents.

All the old CHEVY pickups had a stack of 3 behind the seat for use as road flares.

As I remember from my long-gone youth, the roadwork pots were ball-shaped with flat bottoms, maybe a pair of hanging rings, and a wick and cover.
Also, I'm sure I've seen a can like this before - maybe for storing tea? - though the rust pattern also strongly suggests that it did store black powder, which is hygroscopic, at least for a while.

The pots set out by the county road crews were bigger (so the crew didn't have to come out and refill them as often) and different shaped than the three stack ones that you carried in your rig.
There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading, the few who learn by observation, and the rest who have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.
