25-20Win for 100/200 yards

First time out with the CPA in 25-20W was at the match Friday.  (I don't have access to 200yd ranges so the match was the first time shooting, first time with ANY load, and in the competition.  Not recommended, but real life.)

Second time out was today.  At the match I found that the load, while good in accuracy at 100 yds, didn't hold at all at 200.  1:10 twist with slight key holing at 100.  Shot my best ever off-hand score - but it didn't count for anything because the off-hand matches were at 200.

(Also found reason for the 405 not shooting on the paper at the 200yd off-hand match was a minor omission in the load of a 3/4x3/4 square of paper towel - resulting in wide vertical dispersion with a load that has been my go-to load for years.)

The CPA from a rest is shooting well enough at 100yds to be in the running for prairie dog hunting in a month or so!

Thanks, Joe - it was your load of 7.5gr of 4227 (the ONLY one I could find) that I used.  MY limitation is TIME.  (Yes I could complain about a LOT of things, but it wouldn't be productive.)  OK, so, I need to increase the charge (you did warn that it was a light load) or go with a lighter bullet.  I do feel good about how the 45-45-10 shot and next time around will try dipping in my standard mystery lube.  For having taken it to one match I learned a LOT; and like what I'm seeing.  Room for improvement - OF COURSE!

Ahhh, thanks Joe!   (I have both the SS and the WCF so the 7.5 - 8 gr is a good range to know.)  AND have breech seaters for both, but have yet to USE them.

I would love to have a 100gr mold.  Have the 112 and several in the 85-90gr range.  Might could go the extra mile and try swaging.

Load for .25-20 WCF; 9.0 grains AA 4100, 119 grain MOS bullet (and NOE copy), breech-seated, two grooves lubricated with SPG, 20:1 Pb/Sn alloy. The bullets drop at .258 from both molds.

I have two CPA rifles, Shilen and Krieger 1:10 twist barrels, which give similar results. The load holds up for 200 yards, I need more practice as I will be shooting it for CBA matches here in the Pacific Northwest this year.

Quickload calculates the velocity at 1480 FPS, that is probably why the bullet holds up at 200 yards. The calculation for 8.0 grains of IMR 4227 gives 1208 FPS.

Westerner, saw your post with pic of your shoot table/bench. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting you but love your style. First class gun, just what you need on the bench to get'er did and love the rifle rest. Simple and effective. How many matches does the butt protector have on it or do you change that out fairly often? And the stool I absolutely love it but maybe that is why you're pinched on set up time? Rounding up a couple of guys to help you get it in place has to cost some time. What is it used for in the off season, a motor stand for a Cummings diesel. I love your style. Can't say it enough and please understand if judging by your post I didn't  think you had a sense of humor I would not have posted this.
Love your style. Take care and safe shooting.

Pete,

That's a bit stouter load than I use with Enforcer/AA4100.  I use 9.6 gr with a 120 gr bullet.  Do
you see any flattened primers or other pressure signs?  How about case life?

Nice being around folks with a good sense of humor. If we live long enough we find we make a lot of stuff more serious than we should.

I just got a Stevens 44 in 25-20SS and planning on working up some accurate loads. Has a 9 out of 10 bore so that should help.
Take care guys and enjoy.
