Schuetzenmiester- not sure, but could probably be talked into it. Have a 34-47 Hubalek on a ballard that has on occasion come close to converting me to a simpler life.                                        Westerner-  whew, you had me worried for a minute! I should have known you had it in you.   Krag

Yea Joe, wanted one  when I was a 20 yr old varmint hunter (ground hogs) had to settle for a .14 hornet, eleven grain bullet with 10 gr. 4227 (4600 fps) built on a small Sako.  Cheesy

Says the guy with a safe or three full of rifles you can't go down to the local gun shop and buy ammo for...  Charlie Dell claimed one gun with all the different load possibilities could keep a man busy for nearly a lifetime - experimenting with all the combinations.  Just 10 different components not counting the charge differences has about 3.6 million combinations - something to think about...

I have to have wildcats to prevent insanity or maybe this is the insanity...

Schuetzenmiester - The rifle came with cases and some cast bullets, but no mould. The grooves measured .401 so had a Hoch nose pour mould made at .402, and it has worked very well, breech seated only. I have never tried fixed, no need to open a can of worms, and the rifle was designed to be breech seated. Have only shot it from bench as it has a 30 inch barrel that measures 1.35 x 1.18 at the muzzle, never weighed it, didn't have to. It was built as an offhand rifle, but the original owner must have been younger and tougher than I am at this point in time. I would be interested to hear about your experiences with your rifle.  best regards Krag

Krag, I had Hoch make a .342 base band Pope bullet.  It shoots BS a lot better than the Schoyen ML bullet that came with it. I did ML it a little just to see how it works, but not a lot. It is a offhand rifle but I have squeezed a few 250s out of it in the 90s. Bench takes a little work practice because of the long prongs on the butt.  I have shot it a lot offhand.  It weighs 16#.

I was saved from becoming a "wildcatter" by ammo companies when they came out with 7mm08, so no 7mmX51 for me. That also saved me from a 257X08 or 6,5mmX51, which are still wildcats, so, all hope is not lost yet.

I got my fun with obsolete cartridges, such as 12,7X44R, 8X58RD, 7,5 Nagant.

Schuetzenmiester - thanks for the reply, it sounds like a really fine rifle. This is the kind of thing that keeps me interested. The mould I had made is very much like a Pope, tapered, but base band is not quite as large as a pope would be. Ought of curiosity, weighed it at 17lbs, not much heavier than yours, but more than I can hold and shoot offhand. Maybe 10-20 years ago?  Best regards Krag

Schuetzenmiester- Wanted to congratulate you on the 250s. None here yet, but having fun trying. Close, but no cigar. The stock has a lot of drop, much like an extreme Schoyen. I picked up a straight grip Ballard stock to use until I can get a benchrest stock made to match. Will give it a try soon.   Best regards Krag

Joe has been snooping around in PO A's books there are allot of interesting Wild Cats listed in those books and some completely burned out the throats with very few rounds shot. Worked with a fellow who built a 22-06.and it shot pretty good when the bullets would hold together long enough to make it to the target.

Thanks.  They don't come easy.  After shooting a few, you would think they would but the tendency is to start basking in anticipated glory after shooting 3 or 4 25s.  Roll Eyes

I have thought about making a br stock, but haven't done it yet.  Thought about laminating a few 2x4s together to make a practice blank.

I did make a 3 inch wide forearm to get a little more even with the BR guns.  It is a lot more convenient than putting a muzzle rest on to shoot bench matchrs.

I've only had one wildcat chamber and it was a Marlin 336 chambered in .30-30 Ackley Improved. I loved the caliber and rifle, and it was a wonderful mule deer combo.
But I've also got PO Ackley's book and it seems to me he simply took every cartridge known to mankind and gave it a sharper shoulder and put AI after it. I'm unsure how many of those cartridges ever saw enough testing by PO to really wring them out and confirm they were worthwhile at all.
I had a good friend whose father worked for Ackley here in Oregon, and he didn't speak very highly of him. He said they often got into arguments over methods and procedures, until he finally quit and went out on his own.

Val actually it is those in his books by others that are allot more interesting. As you say Ackley just typically took a manufactured case, changed the shoulder to pickup a bit more powder capacity and then called it his.
