25-20 SS black powder load question
Apr 16th, 2018 at 9:08pm
Print Post
I have loaded brass shotgun shells with BP before but have never loaded rifle brass with BP. I would like to try it in my Stevens 44 25-20 SS. The bore on this rifle is fair and is 1-14 twist. I plan on breech seating and have a CPA bullet seater and capper and decapper. I have some .258 85grain cast bullets on the way. I have FFG on hand. I know FFFG is finer but is FFG workable? What is a mild load for for the 44? Any help would appreciated.

Thanks,
Robert

As Art Said.
BUT: The lube on those purchased bullets, especially if it is blue and hard like candle wax is likely not suitable for
use with Black Powder.

YOu can melt the blue wax lube off the bullets by placing
in a saucepan with water, heat up and the wax will float off the bullets.
Then get some SPG or other BP type lube and pan lube the bullets. (please ask if you don't know about pan lubing, etc.

What art stated covers the basics.
FFG should work well, even 1.5 in either Swiss or Olde Eynsford should also give good results.
While I'm not a 25 Cal shooter, I've shot a lot of 32 and 38 Cals with black powder using breech seated and muzzle loaded bullets. I recommend you also try an over powder wad about .025-.030. For straight black, some powder compression may benefit accuracy, about .030 makes a good starting amount. Should you use powder compression, the over powder wad should still be seated even with the case mouth.
Seat your bullets approximately 1/16 inch ahead of case mouth. Breech seated depth can be a little more or less depending on what improves accuracy.
To mitigate fouling, your 25 Cal will likely need the bore wiped between shots but lots of factors play into that. If you live in a high humidity area, a blow tube might suffice.
Best of luck, please let us know how it goes

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

My suggestion would be to start with a duplex load of 2.5 to 3 hrs of 4227 or Roader 7 and fill the case with bp. If that works satisfactorily, move on to straight bp.

One year at Oregon I tried BP in my 25-20 Single Shot. Breech seated. Do not remember hitting the target. Do remember all the cases I used were ruined.

Steve Garbe reported excellent results with BP in the 25.  Thinking Steve did an article in BP cartridge News.

Writing as someone that has been loading BP in small volume BP cartridges since age 13, it has often been obvious that some folks should best avoid BP entirely. For one thing, never heard of BP ruining cases except by ignoring basic cleaning of cases after each use. BP loads that never hit target are a blunt warning that said reloader is doing some things badly wrong some how. Minute of angle groups for at least 3 shots is entirely SOP in rifles in good condition. For small case BP cartridges and excellent BP (NOT GOEX!!), BP bullets and lube, 10-shot groups under 2 MoA at 100 meters is reasonable, no wiping bore between shots.
