swaging smaller flash holes

Print Post
I want to play with smaller flash holes in my cases & have heard of Fred Cornell's swaging tool.
Does anyone have one?
Are they still made?
Can anyone supply some pictures so I can make one?

Regards,
Ron

Fred Cornell made the one I have. It uses a .059 +/- Lyman decapping pin to swage the flash hole around. For best results use brass that has not been chamfered on the inside. Use a little lube on the pin and bump swage it to size. I use a dorman p19C freeze plug with a hole drilled to push brass back off the pin. For best results I used a .069 reamer to make all my flash holes exactly the same size (think Lapua).
I also have a Hoke pocket reforming die by Kermitool that will swage a rifle primer case to pistol primer case depth and uses a gage pin for flash hole size control.

Does your Cornell tool use a reloading press, or is it a punch with a pin on it, that is hit with a hammer?
A picture might help.
Thanks,
Ron

Yes it is press mounted and Buffalo arms did have them at one time. Dont know if Fred is retired or still making them.
I will try to get my grand daughter to post a picture next time she is home- I am not that computer savy.
Mine came with inside bushing adapters for 38-55 and .40s none needed for 45

You can play with them if you want. I experimented with them a number of years ago when people started talking about small flash holes. So I got some 32-40 made up 10 with small flash holes and ten with a .060” flash hole. I fired them extensively side by side over an entire summer. In the end I could see no appreciable difference in group size. Since then everything I have uses a .060” flash hole that has been uniformed with a Sinclair tool.
