If you are not doing so already try loading your bullet further out of the case so that it contacts the lead/rifling when raise the breech block. This may help prevent gases from sneaking around the bullet before it jumps forward to seal the bore.

Hepburnman,

No issue with fixed cartridges - the issue is with breechseating a bullet ahead of the case.

I don't know squat about black powder from personal experience, but sometimes outsider ideas can serve---
So, is it at all possible that the ring of crud isn't from the powder at all, but some singed, burnt on residue of the wad? Just an idea, and if it's not pertinent, I appologize.  Cry
