Be sure to videotape the first shot so you can put it on Youtube. And, let us know how it kicks once the smoke clears and you can breathe again.

George,
I would say that you could just "fill'r up" , there are many large capacity bottle neck, original cartridges.

But, to be safe, maybe you could load 70 or 80% and use Pufflon as a filler. You are a where that 2/3 of the BP stays as a solid and that weight adds to the total projectile weight?

I want to know about the recoil, too  Smiley

What kind of rifle or action will this be shot in?

This brings up an interesting capacity question.  At what volume does a case full of BP become a pipe bomb?  Shocked

Well, let's see. You have a case capacity of about 300 grains or 1.3 times a 600 Nitro Express with a bullet weighing 1.05 times a 600 Nitro's. Now a lot of that 300 grains of powder might exit the muzzle in a huge streak of flame. No, not too much pressure and not really too much velocity either. Probably comparable to an antique 8 bore rifle.

One way to find out ... tie the rifle to a tire - string on the trigger - behind the truck - Pull the string  Roll Eyes

Here's some data for you but your bullet is weigh over the norm ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
Your on your own with this rifle - Good Luck

Are you going to Breech seat?
Can you use civil war data from a 58 cal rifle?  I understand that the standard military load for this rifle was 60 grains of black powder over a 500 grain minnie ball. Check it out before using.

As a one shot, shoulder held, shooter of a 16lb, 8 bore double, I can tell you that if the 50 BMG holds 300 gr, it would be close in recoil. The 8 bore load is 250 gr BP with a 1080 gr bullet. I survived it but, never again!!

Maybe we're asking the wrong question. Instead of "Can I do this?" maybe the question should be: "Is this a good idea?"

I was given a slug gun bullet while at the slug gun shoot at Friendship that is 69 cal and 2.095" long, it is a PP bullet and I was told it weighs 1900 gr or so.
I was also told at the time that the bench gun used to fire it weighed 90 pounds and the charge was 240 gr of BP.
Evidently the rules of the match were, if you can carry it to the bench, you can fire it.

Case capacity of a 50 caliber center fire = 292.8 gr H2O
There's your BP powder charge to the case mouth but reduce it for depth of seated bullet.  And again, the proposed bullet to be used is too heavy. 647 to 800gr are weights listed for jackets

It's the CBE mold I have so I'm stuck with it Smiley.its length  is close to the ball ammo.ill give it a go in a couple weeks.the gun is a Barrett 99 single shot and very heavy.
