Any advantage to sifting this pull down powder?

I heard that Charlie Dell used to do that to AA#7 for a more uniform charge/burn rate/pressure or whatever.

AA # 9 always had a few large balls which could be sifted out.

WC820 was pretty consistent in ball size and I do not think sifting would accomplish anything.

WC 820 may have changed but when i had it on the first go around I got about 25% medium corse, 65% medium and 10% fines.

I was researching sifter screens. The ones I found were sold per micron size.

Unless you have a set of certified mesh sieves to determine and hold each different size grain of powder, the sieves are expensive - $34.50 each ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Sock the powder with a cotton athletic or hunting knee high sock.  The fines will stick to the inside of the sock.  I do this with black powder to eliminate the fines - works great!

Keith send Jerry Hartwig a PM he has the screens and can give you the proper sizes and it takes three plus the bottom pan and they are a bit pricey. I used Barry's to sift 32lbs. of 300MP a few years back and it's a bit of a chore it took me about 16 hrs. to due it properly. Does it make a difference, it does, is it worth the time effort and money spent, depends on how much one wants to get out of his rifle.

Charlie Dell did sift his AA# 7, his screens went to at least a #40 micron, he could produce some outstanding SD’s with his sifted powder. He had some differences with Accurate Arms over sifting their powder. But, we couldn’t produce a better target with the sifted powder than we could with the unsifted powder at 100 yd on his wind tunnel range.  Ledball

John, do you remember the results?  And if so, what did you do with the fines?
I ask because otherwise, I have 6 lbs of 300 MP and a full set of sieves from 10 - 80 mesh ... would be my 1st smokeless grain ratio test.  I've screened nearly every BP brand available though, collectable & on the market

Here's a link to where I bought my sieves. I suspect they can be found cheaper now.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I got the 8" diameter, brass frame, SS mesh in Sieve #40 (425 microns), #45 (355 microns), #50 (300 microns), and the bottom pan.

I use everything except the dust in the pan. It goes in the flowerbed.

This is about the cheapest set available with mesh sizes within working range: The set of six sieves includes the following mesh sizes: 5 (4,000 micron), 10 (2,000 micron), 35 (500 micron), 60 (250 micron), 120 (125 micron), and 230 (63 micron). Includes lid and catch pan. Sieve Diameter: approximately 7".

John Boy results were positive similar to what ledball has stated and I might Charlie Dell had an article published in the ASSRA Journal and his results were quite remarkable. It also includes some of his correspondence with Accurate powders and their safety take on it. Out of the 32lbs. of the 300MP that I sifted I ended up with just two grades. If memory serves me right I only had about a tablespoon in the bottom of the pan and maybe a 1/2 cup on the top screen or vise versa and it went on the lawn. The two grades were somewhat equal in quantity one just being a bit more than the other one coming off the #45 screen and the other off the #50.

Need to make a correction it was 32Lbs. I sifted and shot and not 48lbs.
