Fillers in the 40-82 Win.

Been doing some research on fillers. Everything from kapok to toilet paper to cream of wheat. Also read that fillers can ring a barrel. Anything to it? Anyone with advise? Loading 25 gr of 5744 and a 280 gr Buffalo Arms bullet.

Art is correct ABSOULTY NO FILLERS WITH 5744. I can’t say that strongly enough. If you want proof take a look at the blown up Ballard at last years Quigley.
I an against fillers as, in my view, they create more problems than they solve. Almost all have problems associated with them. Dacron is infamous for ringing chambers, Cream of Wheat for pulling the cartridges apart. The least offensive is kapok. My own method for straight cases is to put a cork wad down the case to between .050 and .100 off the powder. Never use wadding or filler to pack the powder down, bad things happen.

Replace that 5744 with a case full of Swiss 1.5 Black powder and enjoy

From everything I've read putting a wad down against the powder is the perfect formula for ringing a chamber. Fillers create other problems, not associated with ringing chambers

My suggestion is to NOT put anything inside the case but powder. That from someone who has rung a barrel!

I wouldn't even use 5744, there have been to many blowups with it and it burns dirty. I'd use Unique (10 - 12 gr), 4227 or 4759, if you have it and pistol primers for thoughs powders. You can use BP, with a 10% 4227/4759, priming charge, if you don't want to clean or blow.

Just curious,
what rifle/action,etc are we discussing here?

I agree with what Frank has added. Whatever the gun.

+1 Shoot it as it was designed to be shot.

If simply can't help yourself and must shoot smokeless you might find some load info in one of the Lyman reloading manuals. They change year-to-year, so one of the years may have some info.

Guess I will start pulling some bullets...... Not too many though. Thought I had better get some advise before I got carried away. Last time I mentioned a non single shot I was chastised and a moderator had to step in so no I won't say what it is. Don't matter though the cartridge is the same. Got some 4198 would that do? Thanks everyone.

Some suggested sources of info in this thread that might also be useful to you.

You can also contact the tech folks at Hodgdon and other powder suppliers and ask. Sometimes they have suggestions to offer that is not published in their reloading manuals. Plus, they don't care if you are shooting one of those evil turn-bolt guns.

Yeah. 4198 is a good choice. If you can't find data for .40-82, it is a reasonable idea to look up loads for it in .40-65 and start somewhere in the middle of the listed load range for your bullet weight. Haven't done it myself, but a friend found a good load following that strategy.

another way around this is to shoot duplex.
10% wt of smokeless and 90% black.
full case no prob, and can soot repeatedly.
keep safe,
bruce.

I had pufflon ring a chamber so do not use it any more.

I use foam packing wads.  I slightly compress them to fit in the case and have good success with them.  I understand Kynoch uses foam rods in their NFB loads.

While my initial experience with pufflon was good (large BP cases with 4198), I did damage a barrel.  Fortunately I could rechamber the barrel and remove the ring.

The use of fillers has always been a hotly contested subject, but personally a filler is the only thing that made both of my .40-82's shoot decently.  I used Ross Seyfried's old magazine article about .40-82's as a guideline and his suggested load worked perfectly in both the 1886 Winchester I had previously and the 1885 Winchester High Wall that I currently have.  35.0 grains of IMR3031 with enough bulk yellow cornmeal added to just be lightly compressed when the bullet is seated.  My old (1889 mfg) '86 Winchester went from 6" shotgun patterns at 25 yards to nice round groups of 2 / 2 1/2" at 100 yards.  My High Wall (mfg the same year ... 1889) shoots them just as well.  I've never had a problem with the brass, the chambers, or the barrels firing hundreds of these loads.  I'm using reformed .45-90 cases in mine.  It's a personal call on fillers or no fillers, but I'll continue using this load with a filler in my rifle.

I may have passed my "Best Before" date, but I haven't quite reached my "Expiry" date yet ...
