I was considering getting a Lyman 55 classic Black Powder measure. Any Opinions?

That is what I use. I picked up an old orange one a long time ago and fitted a larger brass hopper to it. Wasn't hard to fig the hopper and its just held in with super glue, been using it for years and no problems other than a little rust from time to time but its in my basement that is a little damp at times and little to no heat.

the lyman is good......but i like the belding and mull way better. just bought another one last week at our gunshow, now have 3 on bench, you and add a larger brass hopper if you like also. make your own adjustable powder measure from the common blackpowder tube measures found everywhere.

I started with a Lyman #55 but didn't like the way the adjustments worked.  It was reasonably consistent.

I then switched to a Harrell's Precision with metal hopper for black powder.  It was much more consistent than the Lyman and much better adjustments.  It didn't work with Fg at all, but very well with the finer granulations.  This is now my smokeless powder measure though.

I later switched to an MVA powder measure ( a copy of the Belding & Mul I think ) and it is by far the best.  It works for Fg and is easily as consistent as the Harrells, maybe even better.  It's also much easier to clean than the Harrels.  I doubt that I'll ever try another type of measure.

I have a Belding and Mull used for black powder in cartridges and 4759, throws course stick powders well.  Very accurate measure, consistent charges.  The adjustment is crude though I log the drop tubes overall dimension and set with a dial caliber.

Two Lyman 55s new one orange body and it’s junk. Other old one friend gave me, made much better but the handle was broken. Put together one good measure out of  parts from both. Barrel fit and castings rough on the new 55 much better on the old one.  I use it for shotgun shells and muzzle loaders.  Like the B&M adjustment is crude, no good way to set with calipers

Neither one perfect, the Belding is a better measure than the Lyman in my opinion. Never handled the MVA measure it’s likely far better than the Lyman or B&M.   Most smokeless powders I use a Harrell’s. They are the absolute best.

The old Belding & Mull powder measures were considered to be more consistent with minimal variations between drops.

The MVA visible black powder measure is a modern version of the Belding & Mull design and is presently considered the best powder measure for black powder:

Since I weigh my black powder I thought I would never use one.

Won one from MVA  Smiley Cheesy
It has increased my loading time considerably.
Thanks MVA!!!!!

This is my fix for the B&M powder cavity. 1/2" brass, drilled 3/8" for the cavity (could 7/16 for more capacity) and drilled and tapped for 1/4 x 20. Turn a piece of 3/8 CRS and thread.

The mic thimble, is off a Redding measure, with the end of thread, turn and threaded to fit it.

You can't see it but, on the far side is a 10 x 32 Allen head, stop screw to hold the adjustment. It bears against the unthreaded 1/4" shaft area.

Funny!!!!
Many competitive shooters blow up before their powder measures.

Guess they are sensitive to static too.

I remember a lightning strike once that wasn't very close, but was just close enough to raise all the hair on my arms straight up.    Shocked

I have 6 Lyman 55's.Each labeled for what BP and grains it throws. Pull the plastic tube off and put in 8" exhaust pipe. I take the hopper out and buff the inside shiny smooth, casting everything. Take the graduation settings (two) and slide them  so they are square with the round metal shaft. I slowly slide the shaft/handle outward ,keep measuring till I hit my grains needed. Lock everything down and your good to go. Will throw consistent loads quickly. The baffle being totally squared no powder hangup's. Will match my B&M but lots faster! Cheap to buy on Craigslist/ Ebay.......
