Darryl:

I see the maximum length of rifle it can hold is 50.5"
It should hold my 1874 Shiloh Sharps which is 47" (30" barrel) and my CPA which is 45" (30" barrel) and my Miller DeHaas which is only 42" long.

Probably half of  my schuetzen rifles wont fit a 50.5" case, and need 52" or longer to work. There's a gal who sells all sorts of soft cases at the CGCA show in Denver each May, and has some really great cases at reasonable prices. I used to haul my own cases in the event I bought guns, but I needed a much longer case for the 34" Hepburn Match B I got at Denver, and I went to see the case lady. She had a very heavily padded case, with side pocket, and sturdy carry handles for $30.
All my long cases are hard cases, so I buy one or more of her extra large cases each May, even if the gun I buy doesn't require a case that long.

You can find some long soft cases here.  You judge the padding.

For you cheapskates like me, at the Colorado Collectors Gun Show, upper level, they were selling soft cases for three for twenty some odd dollars.
Long enough for most any rifle and some are large enough for a schuetzen rifle with the scope.
Hope they are there again this year.

Pelican hard case for my CPA bench rifle.  I'm not going cheap for $3750 of rifle and scope.

Track-of-the-Wolf also offers some decent soft cases in lengths up to 54". Cabela's offers longer lengths, as well.

Eberlestock out of Boise makes some very nice 52” & 57” bags. Slightly tactical in that exterior compartments can re removed or added as needed. Bag also folds flat for a shooting mat.

I have pack used for day or short hunting trips, very well thought out equipment, like this combo.

I don't know gents.  I've broken exactly one rifle stock too many while it was being transported in a well padded soft case.  Fortunately, it was an easily replaceable, modern, high volume, factory production stock and the wood wasn't anything I shed tears over losing.  But, if it can happen to a one piece stock that easily, it will take a lot less force to break a two piece stock mounted between tangs, as many of these rifles are.  Not to mention, the potential for breaking a tang.  All of my two piece stocked rifles get moved around in well padded hard cases only.  The more modern one piece stocked rifles also get stuffed into hard cases as space and cases are available and packing is done with far more care than before.  Modern metal, plastic, and fiberglass stocks will take a lot more abuse than wood of any kind before giving up, so they get padded soft cases if need be.  Fancy wood gets packed like eggs in a really rugged case.

My .02,

My opinion too.  Why use a soft case for a valuable rifle?

My Kalispel aluminum cases are big, heavy, and not very easy to get in and out of my pickup's rear seat. But, I know my rifles are well protected in them so I don't mind the weightlifting before and after the match.

Why take chances?

Agree totally I wouldn't dare transport one of my competition rifles in a soft case but that's just me. I also like the Plano Air Glide as the rifle sits upright and there is no unwanted pressure on the scope. They are far from being rugged so a little extra care is also in order but they have worked very well for me so far being fully aware of their short comings.

Air Canada broke a Plano case in half plus broke the stock off the RPA rifle at the Toronto airport.

Nothing is safe unless you do the transportation yourself.

For air travel or something as prone to transportation damage I would not hesitate to get the same case as Jerry Hartwig has. I have yet to see one made as sturdy as his first hand and well worth the cost.

I agree Jerry. I have one and there's not a case made better than my Kalispel! I only have one complaint, and maybe you've found a fix for it? My Kalispel has the edges rolled in towards the gun, and I always worry the gun could slide down inside the case and contact the sharp aluminum rolled edge. I put some extra heavy black foam along the edge to hopefully avoid that, but have not figured a permanent fix. Maybe it wont happen and I'm just overly concerned? But I wish they'd turned the edge one more time to leave a rounded edge, and not the sharp edge towards the gun.

I have been using these cases for years. I can even leave my barrel sled attached with no problem.
