Unfortunately there are some target rails that are not flat on top or are not set with a level surface such that a center of mass hit on a ram produces only a straight push up the rail which leaves half the area of the feet hanging over the back without tipping the ram off. I've seen this happen with 500+ grain bullets out of 45-70s just as well as lesser cartridges. These would be great hunting shots but a more off center hit on a ram will tip them over. On the other hand we use the same rams at 200 meters for cowboy silhouette but on different rails and 170 grain lead bullets from 30-30s at 1100 fps will knock them over. In BPCR I've cleaned the ram line with 360 grain bullets ahead of 51 grains of BP in a 38-50. Mainly, you have to hit them.

Brings back a bad old memory. My very 1st ever hit on a 500M ram moved the ram but did not knock it over Sad. Load was a 0.410" 400gr Lyman Snover at 1230fps muzzle. Same load never again failed to knock down a hit ram. Nor did a 410 gr Money bullet at a lower muzzle velocity.

Over several years shooting 200M rams (same nominal 25kg rams as std for 500M) a 44-40 load of original 205grain bullet at 1300fps muzzle knocked down nearly every ram hit, failures were low center hits.

Sometimes dead center is the worst place to hit a Ram.
That's why I usually try to hit them around the edges.

Some of us aim for center and are quite happy when bullet hits ram somewhere. But, sometime we get it right and hit inert ram in center. Shocked

I mostly shoot target rifle, but shoot a little bit of silhouette.  I rang a ram once with a Saeco #740 bullet at 1250 fps.   I have since switched to a Money bullet of about the same weight, but shot at just over 1300 fps.   It has more energy/momentum at 500m and hits the rams much harder.

My shooting partner rang a pig with a heavy PJ Creedmoor bullet shot out of a .45-70.   On the same match he hit a turkey and just rotated it by 90 degrees.  Sometimes funny things happen in silhouette Smiley

Turkeys are great rotating targets!! I have rotated a few myself, both in BPCR and shorter range silhouettes. Now and then a chicken too.

Have seen a pig rotated. Almost 180 on its front foot. That would be difficult to do (balance) if you went out there and tried to set it by hand. Only rung one ram with my 38-56 with a 340gr Brooks bullet. Fellow next to fired at almost exactly the same time and rang his ram with a 545gr 45cal bullet. We decided we caught the same puff of wind as it was our first bank and the same ram toppled for us the next time through. There must be rails and then there are rails......... our full-size rams at 200m just laugh at my 32-40 with a 170gr bullet.

Yes the Rolling Block will work very well with the .40-65 cartridge.

I shoot 52.7 grains of Swiss FFFg (compressed .230") with a 410 grain bullet in a 16:1 twist barrel at 1250 fps and have no problem hitting a 880 yard target. All grease grooves are still inside the case.

You could also purchase a Swedish 8x58R Rolling Block since it has the circular extractor (more efficient than straight extractors) that is perfect for .40-65 or .45-70 cases heads.

I would reduce the trigger pull by replacing the flat trigger spring with a .045" diameter piano wire spring.

If you are mainly hunting I would select a Montana Vintage Arms #131 Sporting Vernier Tang sight with a Remington Base.
A setting of about 47 for 100 yards and about 58 for 200 yards with the 1250 fps BP load with a MVA #111 Plain Globe Sight.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

For hunting you want a flat nosed bullet and the Buffalo Arms JIM409400 400 grain FN bullet mould will work well for you.

Arnie:

He is trying to make a hunting rifle; not a long range rifle.

"but hunting deer will be its true calling."

Elliptical bullets are poorly shaped for hunting; whereas Flat Nosed bullets mushroom properly for significantly better take down results.

Suggest you do full body search on your target setter, looking for small C-clamps. Joking, but, who knows?

I don't recall where it was but the rails were not level.  They were tilted slightly forward.  If the targets were not set hanging over on the back edge nothing would tip them  Shocked

you have some very great groups!!!!

but i'm quite comfortable if it does 2-3" groups at 100 yards. MOA of deer's lungs is what i call it.  Smiley

i sold all of my "varmint" rifles expect one. the 20 vartarg. its a tc encore in MGM heavy factory barrel. it can shoot sub-1/4" at 100 yards(5 shots/benched). it ain't the fastest gun or the a long range gun, but i'll be danged, it is sure the "shootnest" gun i have Wink.  1/2" group  at 100 yards with a sloppy handload is mostly what i use.

but i will say, you have some very nice groups!!!

Dave, I knew that re. Deer Hunting main purpose.
Todd:
I was just trying to demonstrate the overall versatility
of the 40-65. from "upclose and personal" to Long Range BPTR. It is a "pussycat" to shoot, but performs well.

In fact, my "old basis" is cast bullet rifles for deer.
Shot many deer with a Flat Nosed 457483-385 gr bullet from my M86 Win 45-70, and 300 gr RCBS FN bullet for my Marlin 1895 Guide Gun. And also with my FN bullets from my 358 Win "modern" deer rifle.
A friend and I are now working with 40 cal hunting rifles.
A 400 Thunder is now working well from a 336 Marlin.
(Straight case based on 303Brit brass. )
And I am indeed looking at building another (lighter)
40-65 for hunting.  Have the Lyman 400 grain Flat nosed
"Sharps" bullet for it, but looking at more of a 300 gr FN
for it, since, just don't really Need the 400 gr for deer.
More to come.
