.38-55 pointed bullets.
Feb 23rd, 2018 at 9:21pm
Print Post
For my newly acquired Ballard in .38-55, I don't need flat nosed bullets, however, no bullets are listed in lead or Cu sheathed except flat nosed for tube magazines.  Anyone found any pointed nose bullets in Pb or Cu sheathed?

Thanks,

Ed

You can buy a mould from Buffalo Arms Co. and make your own.

They have Creedmore, Money or Elliptical nosed moulds that are pointier than the flat nosed hunting bullets.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

You can use a mould that is the same diameter as the goove-to-groove diameter of your barrel or ones that are .001" or .002" wider.

Making your own is cheaper and frequently you end up with better quality bullets of the alloy of your desire.

BUT, you need to check the twist of your Ballard barrel,
because its possible some of the more pointy bullets
available may be too long for the twist and not stabilize as well.

Yes, twist and groove diameter are critical . If that is an original Ballard barrel you might want to be kind and not use jacketed but only lead.

Gyroscopic Stability factor (Sg) for the .38 caliber BACO bullets for 15:1 and 18:1 twist barrels:

15:1  18:1    BACO Bullet:
Sg:     Sg:

2.33   1.62   300 grain Money
1.97   1.37   325 grain Money
2.05   1.42  345 grain Tapered Creedmore
1.61   1.11   360 grain Eliptical
1.61   1.12   360 grain Money
1.63   1.13   365 grain Eliptical Mini Grease Groove
1.61   1.12  365 grain Eliptical Mini Grease Groove (.005" longer)

Sg shouldn't be less than 1.4.  If Sg is greater than about 2.0, you may gain some accuracy by going to a slower twist barrel.

Interesting, Midway did not mention they had those.
Sorry, I did't mention, it was rebarreled with a Danskin barrel a while back.

Thanks,

Ed

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I'd be very surprised at any original Ballard barrel in .38-55 that wasn't at least a .380" groove diameter. Mine run that and much larger.

The gyroscopic stability factor for a 245 grain flat nose  .38 caliber 0.891" long:

15:1 twist: Sg=4.45
18:1 twist: Sg=3.09

The gyroscopic stability factor for a 275 grain flat nose  .38 caliber 1.000" long:

15:1 twist: Sg=3.65
18:1 twist: Sg=2.54

These short bullets have excessive spin in these rifle barrels.
Heavier longer bullets would be a bit more suitable.

Shocked  Wow, those are way out of wack.  I wonder why they even made it.  Did the 38-55 used to have a really slow twist?
