43 spanish

Hi folks,

Considering pulling the trigger on getting an argentine 43 spanish rolling block.  Just wondering what i might be getting myself into in terms of reloading?  It seems theres a few hurdles.. 1)3 or so different varieties of 43 spanish.  2)obtaining quality brass. 3)seemingly limited molds.  Being in Canada doesnt help matters much either (places dont want to ship brass up here).

From what I have read they are comparable to the 44-77 both in size and performance, which sound like pretty good shooters out to the longer ranges.  So how bad is it to get the fixins to get one shooting or am I better off to look into a rebarrel in 40-65 or 45-70/45-90?  I dont mind some tinkering (most of that seems to be getting/forming brass) I just havent found much solid information about grtting these to shoot.

Hopefully some of you folks can get me pointed  in the right direction.

Thanks

Do a search on this forum.
Buffalo arms has 44-90 brass which is the best parent for 43 sp, you can make very long accommodating necks to fit your chamber and headspace on th shoulder.

Dies are readily avail and while not quite a single stroke FL die form, (trim and anneal), it’s pretty simple. Make one right, the rear are  cake.

Bertram brass is not good

Maybe BACO has 43 reformed in inventory

Thank you sir, just the kinda answers I was looking for, just gotta find someone that doesnt have a problem shipping brass to canada, maybe theres some 44-90 brass up here.  I didnt like the sounds of how troublesome forming .348 brass could be.

There are several sizes and rim thicknesses. I’m not in a position to view my last order but I believe this is the parent I use. They have changed the description a tad since my last order.

Verify by cartridge drawing on your end and against your chamber.
I use the .065-67 rim so that there is no way I’ll have a headspace issue.
If you gamble with thicker rims then you may or may not be able to close breach, you should be able to as the original is much thicker. Use  normal rim and use shoulder for reference in subsequent firing, it will be a  win/win for you. Likely cheaper too.

I tried to ship to Canada from the link above and I wasn’t stopped, you should be good to go with BACO.

Bertram Brass may not be the greatest but it will work and being from Australia and available in Canada (The Gun Room, Ontario) it may be your best bet. The Bertram brass will be the correct one for your rifle.

These guys may ship to Canada.

Member  "Life#75"   and "Schuetzendave"   are north of the border and may be able to assist.

Only shot my .43 Spanish a few times, but it is fun to shoot those old rifles

Bertram Brass used to be Godawful, both in dimensions and metallurgy, but the later lots seemed to have at least addressed the latter problem.  Or maybe I have just learned to handle it.

The first box of 20 .43 Spanish I got, I lost eight cases the first time out to body splits.  Quite a bit later, I ordered two more boxes and annealed them good before loading, and annealed the original survivors.  Now I lose maybe one case each firing session, sometimes none.  This with black powder in my Peabody rifle.

The varying lengths (always under the standard, of course) and rim thickness, (thinness and ovalness that requires some dressing to get into a standard shell holder), seems to be worse in the smaller cases.  Didn’t have any noteworthy problems that way with the .43 Spanish, the .40-90 SS, or the .405 Basic I converted to .35 Winchester.

A crying shame about Jamison/Captech/whatever.  These purveyors of brass for those of us in the Antiques Bidness don’t seem to prevail on quality alone.  It’s like “Survivor” on TV.  The one with the overbite, bad attitude and weird haircut always seems to be the winner.

But I have to give Bertram full credit for trying.  I wouldn’t be shooting a lot of the rifles I have if it wasn’t for them.  For that alone, they deserve our support.

Oy, I had no idea about the export thing.
I’m bummed for you.
Yep go with Bertram then and anneal.
Good luck with the project and the hunt for brass.

Would 50-95 brass work to form from?  Rusty wood offers them from jamison for half the price of the 43 spanish.  Got a quote with shipping for 50 43 sp shells for $342...  ouch.

Rusty wood co. Has 50-95 in jamison, but also 50-110 and 50 alaskan in starline brass, no .348 brass at all.  Would any of theses be prospective routes?  They're less than half the price...

$6+ a shell shipped just seems a lil silly...
