You have a good strong action but the typical slow twist and that may limit you to 250-260gr range. The old standby is 10.0 gr Unique. I've had good luck with it. IMR4198 has also performed well. Forget loading. Be sure bullet diameter fits bore as the diameters can be all over the place. Have an original Stevens 44 and it shoots .377 very well. My Uberti Hi Wall will tumble with that dia. and it needs ,380 to perform well. Check Ken Waters Pet Loads for info overload. Lot of powders suited for this caliber. With a 250gr, easy to get 1400fps. Should be plenty for deer. Almost forgot, two length of bradd. Interesting cartridge.
Enjoy

Bob

I use 4198.  I use a heavier bullet, but 4198 will burn well even with light bullets.  I wouldn't use unique or double based pistol powders; the charge is too small for the size of the case.  You can get away with it for years, but can eventually ring the chamber or have a detonation that damages something.

With your twist of 18 you can use much heavier bullets.  Up to 330 grain.  Very popular at one time.  Have had good luck with 300 gr bullets. 19 gr IMR 4227. A bit stout for a Ballard but okay in your Sharps.

Upper target Saeco 300 gr tapered bullet, five shots at 200. Lower, twenty shots custom bullet at 200 yards.

Targets shot breech seated. Use hard bullets in fixed ammo.

Joe, Did you ever try 4759?  I found it a bit better than 4227 in fixed.  Too bad they stopped making it.

I got better accuracy with 4227 in 32-40 for some reason and 4759 in 38-55.

My18:1 twist loves 310 grain bullets with 50 grains FFFg.
Use BP and give the deer a chance.

What was your load with 4759 ?  I have a good supply of it.

TO GET BACK TO THE PERSON WHO STARTED THIS THREAD:
cross088,
A good deer load :
For Your 250/255 gr lead bullet:
WLR primers,  28 gr Reloader 7,
Push a tight wad down-I USE 0.060" low density poly wad cut at 0.375"- WITH THE BULLET AS YOU SEAT IT.
Very accurate in my Marlin 336CB, and my Marlin 1893.
Not too hot, clocks about 1700fps or so.
