Has anyone tried this on mixing alloy?

Yes, it works fine IF you know the hardness of your donor lead.

It is relatively easy to determine lead hardness, and there are several tools available to help. Saeco makes a good tool, as does Lee, and Cabine tool. Lee is the least expensive, and probably works just fine. I have the Saeco, and can say that it works well,have used the Cabine tool, but it is even more expensive. One might search this website, or the Cast bullet website as I know there are some simple tools and charts to determine relative hardness that one could make themselves.

Yes, I have the Lee tool myself. I believe it was about $50 when I bought mine, and maybe $75 these days.
