	I'm guessing it might have been a studio prop rifle, not sure about the cigar though. often "props" were used literally to help a standing subject stand erect and perfectly still for the lengthy exposures. That is one reason so many are posed with their hand on a desk with books, a fake balustrade, or the back of a chair. A good studio would have a wide selection of props selection that the subject or his /her spouse could chose from including forearm for sportsmen. for some reason I'm guessing this guy was single

	Studios also had a vertical rod, with adjustable braces, to literally prop the subject straight and eliminate any swaying for portraits. The lump on the floor next to the fellow’s shoe looks to be part of the cast-iron base for such an arrangement. Usually the studio was better at keeping all traces of the brace out of sight.

	That Ballard would have been a very expensive prop so I would guess that it is his rifle and he is proud of it. I have the exact same rifle, 40-85 Ballard Pacific and would love to take it to family photos but my wife would figure out how use it on me! Even if it isn't loaded it would make a very effective club....

	Anyone have a guess what is in the little holster on the fellows left side? Looks too flat to be a pistol and too wide to be a knife. I've seen men in various trades use a small holster like that for scissors sometimes. Steve

It certainly is, but not clear where the watch itself is stuffed--maybe only his waistband. I once tried carrying a nice gold watch in that little watch pocket that old-fashioned blue-jeans used to have, but it proved a big nuisance--always banging it into things I was working on. They were meant to be carried in a vest pocket.

	He is most likely a working guy and those are his Sunday Best duds. Out working he probably did not carry a watch like that. No need for a watch any way. Start at sun up, dinner when you shadow is short and quit at sundown
