	I have always admired the Peabody target rifles. You have an incredible example. I like the side-hammer Peabody too. Both rifles have a lot of original finish. ... nicely done! Joe Do ...

	That's a nice collection there. May I ask a question? I've shot a couple of MH rifles, but never been anywhere around a side hammered Peabody. Do you need to draw the hammer to half cock before opening the action like a Sharps rifle? Thanks.

Good question. I always put it in half cock. So I don't have the hammer resting on the striker as I am loading a round. They are not rebounding hammers. But this is also a habit from having to do it for other rifles It will accept and eject a round with the hammer down.

	Fazer, thanks for the reply to my query. I've learned here so many things- and to think when I first found this site, I figured I was pretty savy about single shots. Hah! There's plenty of info from the guys here to mine 'em for their knowledge for years.

	Mine is a Spanish contract originally in 43 Spanish. The firing pin is a spring loaded inertial one and when the hammer is down (it is stopped by the sidewall of the receiver) the firing pin is not touching the primer. There is no need to come to half cock when loading. Might as well add a pic of mine. The Peabody is the E-Type Jag of hammer rifles - nothing else so sleek!

	Have one I am building up in 40-50 BN. Crossno has wood that can be made into a sporting stock. Just waiting on wood. Mine has absolutely no markings of any kind on it except a s/n . Was originally a 50-70 but barrel was toast hence the 40-50. JMH

	Top carbine came to me as an action n' butt stock. I had posted information on this conversion when I was able to log in with the name of 'outsidebear', but since changes in the Forum haven't been able to log in using outsidebear user name. I then had a gunsmith use a .45 caliber Badger barrel turned to duplicate original shape/contour of the original Peabody .50 rimfire barrel. Forearm was salvaged/reformed from an original Peabody military rifle forearm that was in rough condition. I had gunsmith weld on a staple on the forearm barrel band and install a Mauser sling swivel on the left side of the butt stock. This makes for splendid carrying in the field. I have an original Peabody Sporting Rifle in .45-50, that has a sling swivel inset into the left side of the butt stock. Top carbine is in .45 2 1/10th chamber. Bottom is an original Peabody .50 rimfire. By interchanging the .45-70 carbine block (original rifle was a .43 Spanish) into the .50 rimfire carbine; then move the .45-70 lock/hammer assembly onto the .50 rimfire carbine, will be able to use Starline .56-50 brass and fire it in the .50 rimfire carbine. Also will have the option of shortening .50-70 brass to proper .50 rimfire case length n' using it that way. Haven't done so yet, but it's on the back burner for 'one of these days'. If you go back and look under: outsidebear you will see several Peabody pictured rifles/carbines. Hombre aka: outsidebear
