H. M. Pope Barreled Single-Shot

Print Post
Approximately a year ago a friend had shown me a Pope-barreled Colt Camp Perry pistol.   I collect single-shot target rifles and Colt target pistols so this pistol was the perfect transition from one group to the next.  After discussing the pistol over the last year, I made an offer and it was accepted.  This was my Christmas present from me, to me.  ... and as it happens, it's exactly what I wanted.

The 10 in. round barrel is marked "H. M. POPE" and numbered on the underside "760 B2". The bore is perfect.

I thought the extended grips might be Sanderson. I took them off to look for a number but instead the left grip is pencil-marked "Houchins #1". I did a Google search and saw the gunmaker Houchins was tied to custom revolvers and modified some for Elmer Keith.

Other modifications are the skeletonized hammer and the cylinder latch thumb piece has been bobbed. The hammer pull is smooth and the trigger is like breaking glass. I haven't shot it (yet).

One of the more unique single-shots I own!

Joe

Joe,
That is a super find! I collect some of these single shot target revolvers too. You have in my mind the holy grail! Congratulations!

I have a Kraig rifle with a Pope .22 barrel. He did a lot of different types of guns. Still looking for a Stevens Pope that I can afford.

Very nice, "rare" pistol.
Some sites brag about inletting, but those grips are amazing.

Another really nice gun Joe, is it listed in the Colt Forum Known Survivors list? You can always tell the Pope barrelled handguns by looking at the muzzle, they are always flat, he did not believe in any embellishment for the sake of looks, they would be wasting time that was precious to him.

Wow,

That's a dandy pistol you got there! I have old Colt Officers Model with the standard Roper grips, which are too large for my hands. But after looking at your grips, I think I can remodel mine to look like Houchin's grips, which should improve things.  Wink

Please consider selling your Ropers to me before you do something like this.  Seriously.  Send me a PM.

To the OP - What a wonderful target pistol!  Simply amazing.  I'm green with envy.
