Hammond Patent Tang Sight

Print Post
This post is influenced by GT's post in the Gunsmithing section titled "more sights".  If you haven't seen it, go back and take a look at his work.

I recently bought a Winchester High Wall with a few custom features.  All the modifications are period and nothing recent.  A friend pointed out the tang sight to me when I was considering buying it.  I am glad he nudged me to get it.

I took a close look at the tang sight.  The shape of the base is similar to a Winchester tang sight base except that it has step-outs where the staff meets the base and is adjustable for windage.  The sight staff has teeth on its right inner edge and the "carrier" that the sight cup screws into has an adjustment knob in the back that when twisted drives the carrier higher or lower.

It's a very interesting design and other than the patent drawing, this is the only actual sight I've seen.

If anyone has other interesting sights, I hope you will post photos!

That's a pretty cool sight Joe!
I have nothing as nifty, but I bought a Ballard #2 many years ago and this "tang sight" was mounted on it. It was mounted on the tang in the factory holes, but obviously built from a Lyman 48 receiver sight.

It's made to be quickly removed with the knurled knob, and it zeros back perfectly when returned to the base.

Joe,
I believe that was the sight I received a picture of from another member.  I really like the simplicity of the adjustments, and once the process is figured out... they are relatively easy to make.
Was this the 1885? or is this yet another?
I do have a few questions regarding the windage.

Yes, that's the rifle above!

Vall, I like the creativity to mount the Lyman receiver sight in the traditional space ... very cool.

Vall,
That's the second one of those I've seen from a Lyman, are there any additional elevation graduations on the base?
Here's a quick modification I made to use a Lyman 57E once upon a time.  Found I use it frequently if there's two holes for a scope base.

Joe,
Is the screw on the back of the base just to take up the slack?

I didn't mess with the base at all.  I was afraid of disassembling it and not being able to reassemble it.

Smiley I understand how that is - says the guy with a couple of projects in buckets that are going to take some time to figure out re-assembly...

Joe,
I did a post on some of my sights a while back, it included a version of my Hammond sight copy - I think - here it is again attached to one of my old clunkers.  I have also attached a PDF of the original H. Hammond patent and his drawings for those out there that may be interested.

No Greg, there are no elevation capabilities in the base. The two mortises have stops on the bottom, so it simply slides in until it hits the stops. I thought a pair of allen set screws in the base could be used as stops and gain another 3/8"-1/2" of elevation, and still be solid. The present Lyman 48 will let a old caliber reach 400 yds., if the front sight isn't too tall.
I have another similar base, but much simpler. It just has two holes horizontally d&t'd to mount a receiver sight on. I've never looked for a receiver sight to fit it, as I wasn't that impressed with the simple design.

Clean up that bench, put the tools away where they belong, and let us know how that ol' loading press works for ya. Merry Christmas, too. Smiley

Not a chance of cleaning... I spent a couple hours cleaning a spot in my middle shop and making room for a gun drill and rifling machine this last weekend, what a huge waste of time... cluttered bench, cluttered mind - I resemble that remark.  That C-H is good, but I favor the Hollywood more.

That was my wife posting that. Roll Eyes My benches look similar- no Stevens or Ballards.

P.S. Is the caulking gun for plugging up the gaps in old stock to metal fit?

Look at a picture of Harry Pop's shop. Grin
