Ruger No. 1 ASSRA #28
Dec 8th, 2017 at 8:20pm
Print Post
Hello all, this is my first post here on the ASSRA forum and I wanted to share a little project that I recently had finished up.

About 3 years ago I purchased ASSRA #28 as a bare, engraved in the white action and wanted to have something special built on it.

In my internet searches the majority of the limited reference that I could find about these actions indicate that most of them were built into schuetezen type rifles.

Well, I didn't have any real interest in going that route, but I always wanted a No. 1 in 256 Newton, just for the uniqueness of it.

So, without further ado, her she is...

I would love to see and hear from the members here what else has been made out of these 100 actions!

Thanks for looking,
Todd

Very nice! Is the receiver left in the white, or is that a finish applied to it?

Great looking rifle ready to go bag an antelope or deer.  Those old calibers such as the 256 Newton are as good today as they were back in 1925!  Tom

The receiver is in the white. Originally I was going to have it color case hardened,  but I have decided to leave it this way.

I will have the lever, buttplate,  grip cap,  sling stud and rings color case hardened.

I'll try to get some better pictures of the receiver and the engraving soon.

I was hoping someone might have more information about the history of this receiver. Who is/was #28, who did the engraving etc...

I was also hoping this would generate more stories and pictures of other ASSRA No. 1 builds.

Thx,
Todd

Congratulations you own the rarest of the rare in the Ruger world. Those actions were the only ones that Ruger ever sold as actions only. Many Ruger collectors don’t know that these exist. They were made available to by Bill Ruger as a way to raise money to by Beeson’s range 100 were made numbered from 1 to 100. At the time you could by the action that matched your Life membership number. I think that if you contact the ASSRA Archivist he can tell you who bought #28 and if he was life member 28.

This a very nice looking rifle.   The ASSRA # 1's have a fascinating and still somewhat mysterious history behind them. We know the general framework as JohnM stated it but the documentation is fragmentary and the accounts are somewhat contradictory.

I have a very low digit one, belonged to a X-ASSRA shooter,   I purchased it used as a barreled action in a wildcat varmint cartridge.   I had Steve Durren do his magic on it and now it's a heavy barreled 22 rimfire with a tuned up 2.5# trigger strictly for the ASSRA's 200 yd 22rf bench matches.  I have not used it much since I got distracted by Euro-schuetzen rifles and offhand shooting----and it a mite much for offhand shooting.  {and since I've been limited in my shooting in general for medical reasons}

Yes and no.

Ruger sold actions only to Heym in Germany, who barreled and stocked them to European tastes.
I know because I recently acquired one in 30-06- octagon barrel, "hogs back" stock with Bavarian cheekpiece, Canjar set trigger (came standard), and engraved action in the white with a roe deer o one side and a chamois on the other.
Pretty nice, but they're a pain (and expensive) to find scope mounts for.
