Looking for date of Remington Rolling Block
Nov 30th, 2017 at 10:49pm
Print Post
I picked up a 4 digit serial number Remington Rolling Block, and I am trying to find a production date. #9828 serial number in 45-70, from all I can find out, it appears to be earlier than 1885, but can’t get any closer than that. Apparently early records were pretty lax. Any help would be appreciated.
Also it appears to be rebarreled, cleaned up and reblued, so no collector, but clean bore, and I’m looking forward to shooting it.

Tough to date one that's a reworked receiver, as who knows if the lower trigger plate is matching number to the receiver, or what all was done?
It appears to be a military receiver, but can't quite see if the lower tang is longer than upper, and if it  has a wood screw in the lower tang? The serial numbers on most sporting lower tangs ran across, not lengthwise.
Would need to see a little more of the action also, and even then probably wont know even close to what years it might be.

It appears to be the end of a screw sticking out on the side of the frame and if it were a commercial action that should be a slotted screw head. Much more difficult to try to date a military rifle worse yet a converted one. Non the less it may be a pretty rifle with all that engraving.

I had seen this, which led me to believe the date to be approx 1880. I was hoping someone had more info than this. Not that it matters, I just like to find out all the information I can on a new toy. As soon as the weather clears, I’ll have to see how it shoots. That’s more important after all. I do like the engraving, it’s quite extensive. Thanks for the replys

Here are a couple more pics of the RB. The engraving is pleasant, looks like a new barrel and definitely reblued. The barrel OD across the flats is 1.15”.

A very nice looking Rolling Block, and the engraving is tastefully done. I see it has the sliding extractor, so it's at least a black powder frame.

I like the short range sights on this. All my others have 1K yard flip ups. This is as close to a short range woods gun as you can get with a 13 pound single shot! Haha .... it’s in used enough condition that I won’t worry about taking it out in the woods hunting.

What method is used to hold the hammer and block pins in? The retainer plate is gone, so did they have some trick method to retain the pins?

I was wondering the same thing, the retaining plate screw is there but no plate (?). Nice looking engraving but the fit of the wood is amateurish at best.

It has definitely been used, it appears the wood on the forend was sanded down at some point, which created the gaps at the rear of the forend. After 140 years, I’m sure it’s seen some hard use, I can only imaging what story’s an old rifle could tell

Wood is very easy to replace, and not that expensive until you get to high grade wood. If you plan to use the gun for shooting and hunting, and decent set of 90% inletted plain walnut can be purchased for under $100.
I've purchased some user grade stocks from this guy, and always gotten pretty nice wood at a very inexpensive price.
