Tip Up 32RF (Short or Long)

Which 32RF calibers were used in Tip Up's ... 32 Short or 32 Long?
DeHaas is void on the length and what other meager information is on the Internet makes no mention
Thanks Kindly
Postscript:  Cartridges of the World - RF cartridges:  Stated that ... The 32 Long RF caliber was introduced in 1861 for the S&W Model 2.  Was quickly picked up by other manufacturers: Stevens SS pistols & rifles as did Marlin, Ballard, Maynard, Remington and Winchester.
Bullet is the Ideal 299153, 90grs with 12-13 gr of black powder. Believe that Trail Boss could be a usable powder also.
Not effective past 50yds due the relatively high trajectory.  Stevens rifles were chambered for it until 1936
Always is nice to have a full library of reference books. Grin

Both, plus Extra Long, in either RF or CF.

I had been informed by persons born before the 1880's, that the 32 short was what  was introduced in the S&W #2 in 1861.  And that the 32 long was introduced immediately after to provide a squirrel rifle caliber to replace the muzzle-loading 32 for those who preferred breech loaders.  I present as evidence the fact that the factory load for both RF and CF variations of the 32 long always consisted of 13 grains of ffg powder.  Hazzard's Kentucky Rifle powder was the preferred brew in those days. As to the trajectory, remember in the day they were comparing it to round ball 32 muzzleloader loads.  You can not get 13 grains of powder in a modern shell.  13 grains was the load in folded head cases.

My 1894 Stevens Catalog states that the Stevens tip=ups were chambered in 32 Long, RF, and for an extra dollar and a half, they would sell you the CF variant.

The '88 cat also lists E.L., but maybe by '94 it was obsolete.

I have tip up Stevens pistols in both .32 long and short RF, the latter required a little trimming with a machinists reamer before the outside lubricated short CF would fully chamber due to the fat outside lubricated short bullet hitting the rifling too soon.  Now to alter firing pins???

Also, both my S&W #2 and my S&W 1&1/2 chamber 32 long.  Is this the old chicken and the egg question?

Before you start altering your firing pin, be aware that Dixie Gun Works (and likely others) sell new .32 RF cases that you can load and use .22 RF stud gun blanks as the "primer".  If I remember correctly, they're a little on the expensive side, but your guns stay unaltered.

Bill, the Tip Up is 32RF and I don't want to bush it for CF.  The Stevens 32 Longs were used in the rifles.  The 32 Shorts were used in the pistols;
* 24 cases of 32 Longs at $3.66 per case made from brass bar stock.

The cases from Dixie are KA1202 Brass Rimfire Case - .32RF (.310 Round Ball), $6.50. The Dixie cases do not identify if they are either 32 Short or Long, plus the cases I ordered are all most half the price.  In addition the bore on this rifle is 0.309 lands and 0.312 grooves and the Dixie's are for 0.310 round balls
* 100 Ideal 299153 bullets (.313) from ten-mile off Gunbroker
* 200 - 6mm Flobert blanks off airgundepot.com
Accordingly. I am just in a waiting mode for the components

John Boy,

I'm thinking coljimmy is right... my Stevens #50 catalog shows the 32 Long RF chambered in the No. 36 Lord pistol, the No. 37 Gould pistol, the No. 38 Conlin pistol, the No. 40 New Model Pocket / Bicycle Rifles, and in the No. 40 1/2 Vernier New Model Pocket Rifle.

There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading, the few who learn by observation, and the rest who have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.
