With a chance to get an 1872 New York Contract Rolling Block in 50-70, I welcome input on the rifle/cartridge.

Would ya'll pay 1k for one that looks original.... fair but not pristine?

I paid $750 for a Michigan National Guard #1 Military contract 50-70 in about 85% condition. So $1000 is not out of line

I paid $1800 for a New York 50-70 carbine if I remember correctly.  That was 5 or 6 years ago.  There are New York rifles listed all the time on GunBrtoker.  Best way to see what they go for is to do an advanced search and see what some have actually sold for.  If it is in excellent condition, I would think $1000 is probably getting close to the upper limit.

This one is nice, but the seller would not come down any from the $950 he is asking.

I've seen them sell closer to $800.00. Who knows... I may do it anyway.

You did alright if the bore is excellent.
Standard price for an average NYS rifle 10 years ago was $1150.  Complete proper NYS rifles now run spread of prices from about $800 to $1250.  Not certain why the NYS has softened while other RBs have increased significantly during that same time period.
Legitimate NYS carbines are simply RARE. Any you can find for 3 digit prices are a real buy. Simply watch out for cut down rifles.....

Would the value be impacted if it was cleaned up....... just removing grime, with no chemical stripping or abrasive material, and leaving the wood untouched?

Collectors of these old military guns can be pretty anal bunch. Some love seeing them as original as possible, including some dried oil, and slight patina. I don't see anything in your pictures that shows any grime or areas that I'd want to address. I'd leave it alone, and not fix anything that's not broken.

Interesting story about the large hammers on the NY State rifles. As it always is there was greed involved.

When they were being ordered there wasn't enough kick back on a regular established arm. So it was decided to order them with the large hammer.

According to the story, Remington was willing to supply the change for $20 a gun, an inflated amount. Their cost with profit was around $5. After the contract was signed at the $20 increase, the excess $15 from the additional costs was then "redistributed" to the politicos.

Nothing changes.

I got lucky and found a 1872 NYS Rolling Block receiver and rear stock for $Can 250.

The receiver was well browned and had some deep rust pits before I cleaned her up.

But cleaning like this and restoring the stock will remove it's collector value on your firearm.

Mr. Jim Goergen prefers to refer to it as Patina so buyer beware when you see the word Patina being mentioned by anyone selling a nice old firearm.

He can call it Green Cheese if he wants to, but it doesn't change the fact that it's actually rust.    Smiley
