Being the Range Officer for almost 2 years of silhouette matches at ridgway I get to see more of the goings on on the firing line than most folks do. For the most part folks are wiping between shots. There are a few, very few I see using a blow tube. Most finish up with plenty of time. Occasionally someone will take it down to the last few seconds before they break the shot.
A proper wiping will give you consistent bore conditions, no matter what you do with a blow tube your bore is constantly changing. You get build up in the lead infront of the chamber and things will also build up in the barrel.
If going hunting, check to see how many shots you can fire before you can not chamber a round. From there you can determine if you want to take a blow tube along with you for the just incase.

The inconsistency is why you buy a case at a time.

I don’t recall much difference in my squirming either way but the target sure squirmed less when I started wiping! One damp patch pushed on a nylon brush and a quick swipe of the chamber with a bore swab. Always finish well before time runs out.

As I have continually read about BP, I probably will learn the routine of wiping. I have purchased the delron rod, jags, wiping oil, and patches. Now if I had a rifle..........................
At the present, the clubs do not require a prescribed time for total shots in a string so I can accomplish the chore without a lot of stress.

Blow tubes were often the subject of articles when BP Cartridge shooting became popular.  It's not a good solution for most situations.

Nuclear Crickets post says it all. Some of the best shooters in the country at his range, very few blow tube.

If you decide to wipe, consider using a Tipton nylon brush rather than a delrin jag.  I used to use a nylon jag but fouled out at the Phoenix 1000 yard match badly.  Patches on a Tipton brush improved things greatly for me.

One thing I recommend is to develop your wiping routine while shooting over a chronograph.  Consistent bore condition is the most important factor in getting a consistent muzzle velocity.  If possible, do this in the same temperature/humidity levels as you'd shoot in your matches.  A fouling management routine that works in cool humid weather does not necessarily work in the hot dry weather.

I really don't care if you blow, suck, wipe, or pee through the barrel, but if you wipe with individual patches, please clean up your garbage when done.  I have seen firing lines covered with cleaning patches that some one had to clean up. (If peeing through barrel, be discreet!)

Good point.  I have a Rubbermaid tote sitting until the muzzle at the end of my cross sticks.  I put a big hammer in the tote on windy days to keep the tote from blowing away.

It also helps to have someone else hold the rifle Smiley
