38-55 Ballard Trim Length
Nov 2nd, 2017 at 8:40am
Print Post
I hope this is a simple question.  I have a 38-55 in the longer Ballard chambering and shoot the 2.125" length brass.   Should I assume the 2.125" is the max length and trim to 2.115"?
Thanks in advance for a simple answer. Wink
Mike.

Ballards may be weaker,

I always trim to fit the chamber of the gun. I don't really care about posted trim lengths if my gun's chamber accepts longer. I try an un-trimmed case in the chamber, and trim it until it fits. Then trim all the rest to match that length.

I do also if they are high pressure loads. I've never had to trim my old rimmed cases a 2nd time. They don't seem to grow at the pressures and velocities I load them.

Mike, why don't you start first to determine the length of your chamber - then do any trimming if needed ...

A chamber cast, measured at the proper time, can give you the max length that your chamber will allow and you can decide accordingly.

If you are going to be using fixed ammunition, and have a favorite bullet that you might desire be crimped (eg for hunting), you might trim some cases so that the mouth falls at the crimp groove at the cartridge OAL that you determine to give good accuracy.

Most are chambered using ( SAMII ) specs. and one should probably use those guidlines if so done and well they are very published and easily found. It is typicaly those that have per-say been wildcated that can indeed benefit from a chamber cast. A chamber cast can be invaluable in a multitude of ways and well beyond just determining a trim to lentgh and something I would highly recommended in either case. And it will provide you with the correct answer to your question the one it provides you and where the others can't.
