Bullet casting ( range scrap question)

So.. I got about 300lbs of Range scrap lead I'm going to cast into ingots for later bullet casting.
There are alot of fullmetal jacket pistol bullets in the mix.
My question is...
Can I just toss it all in a pot ..will the lead leak out of the full metal jacket pistol bullets ..or pop and Splatter molten lead all over..I would hate to have to pick out all the jacketed bullet.
I will be meeting lead outside in a safe area, in a Dutch oven with a lid..
Please advise
Thanks guys

I did the same thing using a cast iron pot over a gas burner. Skim the jackets off and discard. No spattering.

Thanks for the reply Joe,  with copper having a higher melting temp. then lead   how does the lead get out? ..i hope this isn't a dumb question .haha

It gets out the hole in the base.

Got a hold of 750 pounds if wheel weights.  Old Cast Iron Tea Kettle (made in China) over a Turkey Fryer.  Left the lid open as If there was any water I wanted it to Steam off while the WW were heating up.  Worked like a charm, maybe 30 pounds at a time.

Lead runs out of the base or nose of the jackets. Jackets float on top of the lead like bobbers.  Make very sure you don't drop wet bullets in molten lead.

             Joe.

You will never forget a drop of water in molten lead!  The expansion ratio is something in the neighborhood of 1600:1. Safety glass and heavy leather gloves are in order.   No poly clothing, it will melt into your skin.

"Full Jacket" pistol bullets means (to me) these plated bullets which have no exposed lead anywhere.  Unless the impact broke the jacket, no lead will get out.   If'n I had a lot of them, I might try to find some easy way to open the jacket.  If just a few, I'd just forget about 'em.

A few years ago, having gotten tired of mystery metal #1 through 99, I consolidated ALL of my alloy and made several batches.

batch 1 is pure lead with some tin.
batch 2 was WW and I added tin.
batch 3 pure lead
batch 4 etc.

300 and 400 lb batches  - had them measured.
batch 1 is 30:1 (I add tin for 20:1)
batch 2 turns out to be 8%tin 3% antimony  (ok for pistol bullets and plinking
Pure lead for alloying.
Linotype for 22 caliber high velocity

NO more guessing.

Using half a stainless beer keg over a turkey fryer and using a weed burner helps.

Ingot molds of 3" diameter 3" high work well for dropping a big ingot into the bullet pouring furnace.

Do not put any jacketed bullets into the molten alloy.  Put the jacketed stuff in the pot while it is heating.  The moisture/water will cook off before the alloy goes molten.

Moisture/water forced UNDER the alloy and it wil super heat  blow up sending alloy everywhere. Hot molten alloy.

Make sure all is dry before adding to molten alloy.

Good advice!  Let me just add two things from experience:

a) tinsel fairy and
b) scars
