In-line seater

Has anyone used the Vickerman in-line bullet seater available from BACO and do they improve the seating alignment over a regular seater? This is for a 45-70 so I will be shooting fixed.

I have used that style in .30 calibre and it is better than some press dies, but if you want to see a difference go with the Wilson chamber type. The Vickerman is easier to clean though and that is worth something. I will admit that I got it at a gun show for $35 set up for 3 calibres.

I've used the Vickerman and found it satisfactory. It's been some years and I didn't use it in .45-70.  Can't say it won me any matches, but it worked nicely. I always felt that the Bullets were likely seated more uniformly. Perhaps that was imagination.

Do you have anything to check your run-out?   If you don't you won't know. If you do you can see how your standard dies are doing.   Never ends what you can spend hey?

P1, that was not far from ten cents on the dollar.   Not bad!

You bring up a good point. Why spend money to fix a problem that may not exist? Let the Democrats do that. I will have to buy/borrow/build a tool to check for run-out.

I use a Shiloh Sharps .40-65 inline seater.

It improved my bullet concentricity to 90% zero runout and 10% with .001 runout.

How much did it change the scores?

Bob:

Shooting Silhoutte targets you cannot evaluate the increased precision of your hits since a strike is a strike.

I do not use the .40-65 for target shooting so it is hard to determine the extent the reloading may have increased shooting precision.

In other shooting disciplines runout of .002 or more will affect your shooting precision.

Before adopting the inline seater; I had a significant amount of my bullets with .002 and .003 runout.

When I changed my bullet seater due to excessive bullet runout I increased my ISSA & ASSRA scores by 6 points per target over a two year test.

I borrowed a run-out gauge and found my RCBS seater was getting .010-.012 run-out. I haven't researched it to see what's up with that. I switched to a Lee seater and cut it to .003. Funny thing is, the loads shot pretty well at 90 yds. I'm using a bullet with a fairly long bore ride section which amplifies the run-out. I've made in-line seaters before using a chamber reamer and a simple push rod to hand seat the bullet but I will probably look into buying one this time.
