I will be using this load in a Remington Hepburn, with a Badger  barrel with a 15 twist. Have 245 gr. rnfp bullets. Thanks for any info. Bonner

I have a CPA with a BRC 15" twist barrel. I use an Accurate 376255C bore ride bullet. 17 gr. 4227 (1340 fps) with a card wad .200 over the powder consistently shoots well under an inch when breech seated. I've managed several groups under 1/2". Shooting fixed, groups open up to 1 1/4". 9.0 grains of Unique (1125 fps) no wad, shoots around 1 1/4" fixed with the powder back against the base. I've shot the Lyman 245 grain bullet and it's a good plinker but won't shoot with the Accurate bullet. I have to bell mouth the cases when breech seating to prevent case collapse. Pistol primers work better with the Unique. With 4227 it doesn't seem to matter. All this shooting was done on a 90 yd. range.

It would be a shot-in-the-dark to recommend a 38-55 smokeless load for that bullet without knowing your intended purpose(s). Are going to plink tin cans for fun, shoot 200 yard bench rest competition, offhand practice, whatever? What are your accuracy expectations or goals?

I will be shooting off the bench, I would like to group in the three inch range for now. I am new to cast bullets and making them, seeing some of the targets that have been shot by the members here is unreal. I am still trying to find the 200 yard target with my loads. Thanks for any help. Bonner

3 inches is certainly doable.  I had BP shooters shooting nearly all Xs on the NRA SR-42 target with a 1.90" X ring.

Older 16 twist Uberti, factory tang sight, with NEI 380250 using 14.5 grains SR4759 with .030 fiber wad under bullet giving 10 at 200 in 2.7 inches.

If you can't get on target at 200 yds, set up at 50 yds. Hold center on bull but center your group about 4 inches high. Move target to 100 yds, your group should be more or less on. Again hold center but adjust sights so group center is about 10 inches high. Now move target to 200 yds. You should be on target, maybe a bit low though.
The load suggested by oneatatime is a good place to start. I recommend not using a wad at the bullet base using smokeless whether using fixed ammo or breech seating. For some rifles the wad may help however. Try both to see which gives best accuracy.

A old match winning load from the 70's and 80's is:

18.5 gr, 4759, pistol primers, 250 - 300 gr bullet.

I've kept that load in mind since then and it would be my stating point, if I built a 38/55.

Keep in mind that it would only be my starting load in a strong rifle, like a 44 1/2 or HW type action. I would then work on both sides of it, mostly the lower side.

I also like Unique for lower velocity loads and have had excellent results in my 45/70's with it. Worth a try in 38/55, for sure.

Thanks for reminding me, Frank. I use Federal LP Match primers. I might add that I fired something over 1000 rounds in developing this load. Nothing is really easy unless you are really lucky. This was with various bullets, powders, seating depths, with and without wads. For a more readily available powder the OP might try 21 grains of H4198.
